Any good PS1 RPG's that don't take 40+ hours to finish?

>> No.8771098

How much of RPG playtime padding is just dialogue, running around trying to find the right NPC to trigger the plot, fights and cutscenes?

For that reason alone I find it difficult to play without a fast forward button.

>>8771083
You posted it. Vagrant Story is under 40 for sure. BoF 3 and 4 are around 40, definitely less with emulator fast forward. Lunar 1 & 2 are 40ish. Alundra definitely.

You literally posted two of them Vagrant Story and Suikoden 2 are both reasonably long but not ridiculous. Suikoden 1 is like 15-20 hours unless you do a completionist run and that only adds a few more hours.

My only problem is long attack animations you have to watch over and over, and when you just want to explore a dungeon you've mostly completed but having constant encounters.

The fact that most RPGs have been done at ridiculously low levels or speedran shows that level grinding is almost always a player problem.

If you plan ahead you can get an ability that turns off random encounters in disc 1, you can get magic from card modding instead of using draw and since enemies scale with your level you don't miss the experience points. No grinding (except in the beginning) shaves a lot of time off the usual estimates

Those runs often exploit glitches that the casual player would have no idea existed.

>> No.8772787

>>8772754
A great game to play to really get a feel for the role of the grind is FF4 Free Enterprise. It's a game designed to be speedrun but the final boss has a shitload of hp and a big full-party AE, and fixes glitches that can be used to skip the fight.

Basically the game doesn't split XP normal(by default). So the result is that you can get most of the XP you need from bosses alone. In fact, if you fight all the bosses you'll be way overleveled (the race context provides a nice incentive to challenge Zeromus as soon as possible but still leaving grinding to the player). Ultimately there are a few highly-efficient grinding spots, where you can typically grind the levels you need in 5-10 minutes. Beating most bosses at low levels doesn't require glitches, just good understanding of the mechanics.

JRPGs are generally pretty poor role-playing games. The best they can do is hit the right combination of story + presentation + making the combat somewhat entertaining.
Most of them are a niche genre for autists who get comfy feels from repetitive shit. Playing through them with fast-forward is autistic too. Why not outright skip all the pointless random encounters and hex edit your stats? Why not watch somebody play it on youtube then because you're obviously not entertained by the "game" part.
