The last time I went to a place that sells video games it was in a shopping center, my wife was with me.
Then came this autistic giant that looked like the son of Chris-chan with a white Shaquille O'Neal talk to me about games out of nowhere and I was hopelessly trying and failing to end the conversation and the dude would just not stop talking about new games and console wars and the best generation of Pokemon and how the regions were based on real world places.
After 5 minutes of that my wife just left me there hearing this guy talk and went to see some shoes or whatever but he was so nice and honest and childlike that I could not just leave and he went on and on and seemed so happy to have a friend to talk about games, maybe there were only children there and he could not talk to then until I arrived.
It seemed like I was there for half an hour. That was maybe 5 years ago. Now I just feel too old to go to such a place and look like one of the tards salivating over toys for children and teenagers.
I now buy old games only on street sellers I know and from places that sell by mail and all new games suck anyway.

Best experience I’ve had in one of these places was this store in a mostly abandoned mall in Cincinatti. Had a solid selection of games for sale and a legitimate arcade area where all the games were set to free play and you paid a flat rate. Ended up picking up a dirty model 1 genesis with a controller and a/v cables for like $45 which felt fair.
Most of the time the biggest bummer is dealing with autists working the counter who think they’re charismatic. I’ve only ever had a few bad experiences in retro game stores, where you can tell it’s run by some wannabe entrepreneur who just learned that nostalgia is profitable.

Second hand video game stores have always been cancer beyond cancer. The “retro video game shoppe” started popping up in the mid to late 2000’s all over the USA. They are all run by fat losers taking advantage of other fat losers. Anyone who spends money in these fat loser magnets deserves to lose a few bucks.
Collecting retro vidya is stupid especially if your goal is simply to play them. Having a consumerist museum in your living room/ bedroom is cringe. A few games that have meaning to you, sure. A few games that meant a lot to you as a kid, sure. Just remember autistically collecting toys is the pathway to permanent virgin manbaby.

I worked at a retro store for a bit, and while it wasn't the worst job I had, it was more irritating than you'd think.
The big problem is just getting in good stuff to sell. Almost everyone in retro gaming knows that if you want to sell your stuff and get the most money possible, you sell it online. Because of this, the only people who sold stuff to us were either parents getting rid of their now adult offspring's stuff, or those who needed cash immediately.
Literally every day, we'd have at least two people come in to sell either a Wii with a ton of worn Wiimote accessories, or a PS2 with a collection of SingStar games.
The shop was absolutely stuffed with crap. We had dozens of Kinect cameras and copies of Kinect Adventures. Quite a few of which would still be sealed. The shelves of the glass display cabinets bended under the weight of several Assassin's Creed Collector Edition statues.
All of which we paid pocket change for.
When you did get someone coming in with a high ticket item, even if they knew what they had, they were desperate and ready to settle for less. I can remember a woman came in with a clearly loved Donkey Kong Jungle Green N64, complete with DK64, expansion pak, and jungle green controller. She needed money to pay for rent, and we gave her $90 AUD. The store immediately sold it next day for $350.
So if we did occasionally get something noteworthy in, you might be asking why your local store seem to have nothing there each time you visit?
That's because we had at least seven customers who would come in every day, and get whatever was hot. The majority of these guys were mentally handicapped. So everyday. they'd come in with either their elderly parents or carers and spend their NEETbux on CiB Nintendo games, especially Pokemon. Didn't matter if they had already bought a copy of Pokemon Crystal from us, if they had the money, they'd buy it again at full eBay price.

We had so many abnormal people come in. I had three unrelated situations where mothers came in looking to buy a GB or GBA for their sons, along with some games. In all three cases, they specified that their 7 or 8 year old sons couldn't read, so they needed games with as little text as possible.
The only thing I think the store did well with was having a good selection of PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Those were the only two systems we regularly had good, affordable games for. It meant that rather than dealing with retro games, we were mostly just a place for people who were too poor to have a PS4 or Xbox One in 2021 to get new games.
All in, retro game stores are kinda crap for both workers and average customers. At a worker, you get stuck trying to sell stuff that no one wants, and average customers rarely get to see anything worth buying.
Not even the owners really benefited that much for the set up either. Even if they paid diddly-squat for shit, it just meant they were constantly needing to take stock that couldn't sell back to their homes, as were we're always short on space in the store.

For some reason I've found computer stores to be worst for this sort of thing somehow. A lot of videogame people seem more chilled (but I haven't much experience dealing with retro game stores). The owner treats every customer like they are out to scam him, and says they clean/test all their shit when they clearly don't. Then looks for any reason to deny a return when shit doesn't work.

I brought back a defective Xbox controller once (which was also lightly caked in mud), 15 minutes after purchasing it, receipt in hand, with explanation of troubleshooting steps and what does/doesn't work, and he still seemed hesitant to replace it.

Yeah, I really hate that the younger generation is getting screwed this hard. Unfortunately I can only see this problem getting worse as time goes on. 15 years ago, this was a poor weeb's hobby. Now it's a rich man's game. I was lucky enough to be "grandfathered" into the hobby, so to speak, by having had a 15-25 year head start on collecting. What's worth tens of thousands of dollars now could be had for original price (as it was brand new) or pennies on the dollar back then.

I really don't know of any affordable hobby for this current generation. Guns, cars, video games...all currently absurdly priced. Maybe things like original Xbox might still be affordable for now, but there's no telling how much longer that'll last.

At least prostitution hasn't been keeping up with inflation. I still pay 2015 prices for sex at my local go-to places.

I've never got the impression that they think they're smarter than me or something, but I do get the impression that they simply don't enjoy games as much as the average gamer. They price a little bit more than eBay, offering the convenience of just being able to take stuff home and play it without waiting for shipping and what not. I don't buy stuff from game stores (or eBay) all the time but do it as a little treat every so often when I travel.
I mostly think you feel this way because people who work at game stores are fat dorks. If it was a handsome dork you would think he's just a guy who likes games. They always get these guys who are a mix of dnd fag and wannabe skate rat to run these places and it never looks good.
The only game store I actually ever enjoyed going to was a guy who knew stuff about the games and consoles he was selling, had a big grin in his face while chatting, gave recommendations, wasn't afraid to say that some games stunk, and threw in shit for free because I was buying like 100 bucks worth of PS1 stuff. I was like 15 at the time so it could be rose tinted glasses remembering a better time overall, or maybe he was a master con artist. Who knows?
