I'm actually working on a map for the serious sam jam. It's been pretty fun but man is the editor obtuse sometimes. My only complaint (that an anon brought up in the previous thread) is that vanilla tse textures kinda suck. There aren't many floor/ceiling textures so without proper architecture rooms can feel somewhat repetitive. But limitation breeds creativity as they say.

You can move the crosshair, walk around and stuff.
It's pretty fun.

It's still very primitive, but I'm proud of it.

Doom: Awesome, Episode 1 from '07. A decent Ultimate Doom episode. Pretty spammy on monsters but stingy on resources so you can't go all out like you want to. Maybe I did a poor job finding secrets. One last one, Moonstone by Alexander "Eternal" S. from 2012 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/m-o/moonston).). Some Eternal Doom worship from everyone's favourite Ruskie. The gimmick is that he stuck to the 64x64 grid on his editor. Tight on ammo and extremely tight on health, you really need a coherent plan to get through it well. Easy to tell where to go but with some non-linearity. I couldn't find any secrets but I gave up hope on that front as soon as I heard the Eternal Doom midi, apparently that's were all the health is.

Normally when I run something on my internal network, the services don't have a problem seeing each other, so I'm guessing it's something to do with how the q3 server is broadcasting itself but I'm assuming something like this would just work in 2021?

Necessary for the author's vision. Massive ornate slaughters like those are often not considered for GzDoom though because it tends to not handle well huge levels with lots of fine detail and lots of monsters at the same time. This goes quadruple if you use mods with lots of detail and complexity.

I guess you can just look towards levelsets with much more restrained monster counts. Optionally, if your computer is old you can try out GLES and see if there's better performance there, or see if your computer supports Vulkan, which gives some people a good performance boost.

Honestly, the kings of level design are John Romero for Doom and Allen H Blum for Duke Nukem 3D.

Both people managed to create such a cohesive and attractive style, which works perfectly with the games' visual and playstyle narratives. I'm glad Romero is still making maps, E1M4b and E1M8b were awesome, Sigil was awesome, and the new level was awesome.

Unfortunately Blum checked out, despite his Mirage Barrage and especially Golden Carnage levels are masterpieces.

The only other outstanding mapmakers I know were Russell Meakim and Arya Iwakura, who created No Rest for the Living. Wish they return one day.

Wtf, Perdition's Gate is really good. I'm 12 maps in and so far all maps were balanced for pistol-start, fun, decently challenging (I'd say it's just a tiny bit harder than TNT), some unique and nice graphics and music. How is it so underrated? Because it's not technically free or id approved?

Not related but I've also been playing Mass Extinction and that's also a really good .wad, even though map 14 forced me to fight multiple Cyberdemons in a trap-arena and map 15 forced me to Arch-Vile jump to get to the secret exit. Only to get to the super-secret level afterwards and get to fight dozens of archviles in a small arena. I see all of these as good things.
Having to learn Doom tricks to finish a .wad is nice when you don't have to do it every single map. Kinda like map26 in Scythe which was my introduction to slaughter gameplay.
Now I just need to learn how to two-shot Cybies, Arch-Vile jump and SR50 consistently.

shadow warrior and duke give you enough health and ammo to fuck up, so you can basically play however you want, but also the enemies have less predictable audio cues, flinching mechanisms, and spawns, so they lack that "do the right thing to win, do the wrong thing and lose" flow that you get from extra crispy and well done.

F1's okay. Kinda feels like Doom 2016's style of gameplay. Walk around, get into an encounter, rinse and repeat until the end. Some of them hit, a lot of them miss. The ones that did hit, however, were very good. I especially liked the end encounter with the turreted revenants and not-archviles while the room got flooded with pinkies and a few pain elementals. Not really a fan of Doom's low res sprites walking around in a world full of HD textures but that's a very opinionated subject so whatever.

Really, quite a lot of FPS play good or decent with a good gamepad.
