Without Steam digital game stores would probably be monopolized by one of Microsoft/EA/Ubisoft/Activision Blizzard clients with always on DRM mandatory for every game, software as a service, spyware etc.
Steam has to appease the big players and the consumers at the same time and tries to be as consumer friendly as they can while being viable for greedy AAA bastards that gamers want so desperately to fund.
Even if Steam is less consumer friendly than GOG, it's a blessing that they were the ones to get into where they are instead of the big publishers with infinite money and zero regards for consumers.
Imagine if Uplay or Origin were the place where 90% of PC gamers purchased games from, imagine EA and Ubisoft having all of this power to dictate the rules.

Valve doesn't make vidya anymore. Half Life Alyx was designed to be a showpiece to sell their VR hardware and it didn't work. The Steam Deck is going to crash and burn and I can't wait to buy one for $99 a year from now when they put them on clearance during a holiday sale.

i tried giving BM a try again, after the first time i tried it was only completed up to Power Up and available on ModDB.
i quit at Surface Tension. i genuinely could not stomach the horrendous re-skinned rebels fucking the flow of the combat so god damn bad. it's like they had NO idea what made running and shooting fun in the original game and just completely gave up in favor of aesthetics (which the HECUs look fucking ugly anyway).

pic related my disgusted face after realizing there's no way i was going to put up with hours of fighting rebels into a 6 hour long low grav platformer session. 'dropped the ball' doesn't even come close to describing BM for me.

I think most modern games have "test cubes" or hidden geo somewhere in their maps to test or trigger things.
