Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games (this is /vr/, so any PC/6th gen game up to 2007 goes!). If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

>New here? Interested in a series to get started with? Check out these!
Burnout
Daytona
Dirt/Colin McRae
F-Zero
Forza
Gran Turismo
Mario Kart
Midnight Club
Midtown Madness
Need for Speed
Outrun
Project Gotham Racing/Metropolis Street Racer
Ridge Racer

Tokyo Xtreme Racer

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

>What's that?
A track and game is chosen and people can challenge for times on it.

Apparently he played the game a lot on a keyboard but then was supposed to play it on a wheel and had no problem adjusting to it. Then the final race was a 5 lap Monaco circuit and he ended up lapping all of his opoonents and spun out the guy in the 2nd place which made him really mad because he won a Dreamcast.

Of course not. It's not like it actually prevents you from enjoying the game. 90% of players don't even get the Ignition car to begin with, since you get it only after beating all other difficulties, and there's no reason to use it unless you just want to see how hard you can flex on all the other cars on the highest difficulty after all. If anything, the bugs are a balancing element in running the mirror mode tournament with Ignition, like an additional threat to increase the difficulty.

Does anyone remember Midtown Madness? I had the game on my mind for years but I just couldn't remember what the name was/recognize the name. For some reason it was really hard to google. But today I randomly put "city driving Michigan" and I recognized the name from the OP and realized it's the same game.

Why aren't there more games like that where you can just chill and drive around a city peacefully, doing nothing? Maybe most people hate city traffic, but for me as someone who grew up in a small town it was very exciting to pretend to adhere to the traffic laws.

Driving around the city is literally the one thing you cannot do. There are all those cities in the game where you can truck things to and fro, but you cannot actually get inside them, only on the outskirts.

An ETS2 game where you deliver things around the city (obviously not in a truck but some kind of van at most) would be nice.

We weren't discussing the first game being "unpolished". We were discussing why NFSU2's open world is terrible.

I would much rather take repetitive tracks over a terrible open world navigation system. The bottom left of NFSU2's map is awful as well, it feels incomplete.

>> No.8628634

>>8628612
UG1 requires you to rice your car as well to progress.

>>8628614
Well I don't disagree, I'm just saying open world allows way more variety in racing than racing the same few tracks with only variation being mirrored or in reverse. The industrial area is definitely the worst part of the map yes.

It's also interesting to compare open worlds of next games which are designed better, most wanted has 3 distinct areas with lots of fast straight lines and Carbon is much more curved and slower as a result, there are almost no straight roads on the map except the highway which almost never gets used. The 4 parts of the city are still easily distinguishable as well.

>> No.8628679

>>8626680
I'll never forgive them for artificially locking one of the tunnels in the first island. That piece of the map is fully complete, and you can even visit it in one of the drag races IIRC, but the devs tought it was better for the "sense of scale" to avoid players from directly going from the Coal Harbor to Beacon Hill through the highway.

Spent a few hours further playing GT2 yesterday. Man, this game is fucking fun in 60fps. It feels so much faster and gripper than 3/4 do.
Anyway I've been having a blast with license tests, trying to perfect them. It's so comfy, I don't understand people who complain about them. GT1's tests would suck because they would throw entire laps at you, but GT2 keeps it all short and addictive.
