Something tells me people weren't going that crazy over the SNES version of KI, and the sequel to DKC.
Also interesting that they are technically speaking bad of their own products, by saying the SNES is stronger than the N64 and VB.

Shouldn't you be writing something like "While the SNES had numerous hits, the Virtual Boy stole the show with it's revolutionary 3D experience, and the Ultra 64 showed us the real future of video game graphics". or something equally hyperbolic. By saying "yea the Virtual Boy was there with some shit, but check out these SNES games!" you're kinda dooming your own product.

I think part of Chrono Trigger's staying power as a classic of the jrpg genre is its ability to convey sidequest logic. It's zelda like in the way it communicates to the player how problems must be solved, and traversing time periods to obtain the solution feels proto ocarina. While the moment to moment gameplay of CT and LTTP are very different, they follow a similar philosophy on how they lead the player to an answer.

>ACM is the backbone of Nintendo Ultra 64 development, as well,

It's strange to see it vaguely suggested here that Tim Stamper was really excited about the N64, not so much because it could live-render 3D scenes as because it could display pre-rendered 3D models better than the SNES could, thanks to the higher potential data capacity of its cartridges and its higher data decompression speed. I guess it does make sense for them to have put some focus on that though, since... it works, after all. I mean, Killer Instinct Gold looks pretty nice.

I wonder whether they were ever planning to make a 2D Donkey Kong Country for the N64.

I thought Dragon Quest V was that, at this point? Or maybe they're specifically talking about the SNES as opposed to the SFC, and they're assuming that DQVI will indeed actually be released in the US?

They sure are promoting a lot of games on this page that will never actually be released in North America... not that that's their fault.

>As for the music, it challenges Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct as the best for any video game.

Nintendo Power really wants us to think that pre-rendered 3D imagery is somehow the thing that makes music good. This is an especially awkward claim for them to make in the middle of Epic Center, whose readers will be familiar with Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy, and ActRaiser.

I can understand where they're coming from in a sense-- DKC and Killer Instinct were rare at the time for actually putting their music on a separate CD ("DK Jamz" and "Killer Cuts"). A common enough practice in Japan, but virtually unheard of in the west. Of course, we all know Chrono Trigger wouldn't get that luxury but still... "this game's music is so good you'd want to listen to it in a CD player!"

I can understand a magazine like EGM or GamePro making such a mistake, but isn't Nintendo Power published and edited by Nintendo of America. Someone at the editorial staff must have a list of every game ever released by Nintendo in North America. Especially considering Dragon Warrior II and III came out months apart.

>> No.8534719

>>8534579
They had about three weeks to put together roughly 120 pages worth of material, send it off to the printer, and have the printer have enough time to print. then get it to the stores and subscribers. That's about 40 pages a week, or 8 pages a day. With five writers, and one editor checking on them. I'll lump the editor in with the writers for the sake of argument.
Around this same time period, EGM had about 21 writer/editors(they did double duty), and put out 300 page magazines, and GamePro had about 12 writer/editors(again, double duty), and did about 175 page magazines. With the same monthly schedule, than meant EGM was putting out 100 pages a week, or 20 a day, and GamePro was putting out about 58 pages a week or 11-12 a day. EGM's 21 writer/editor staff put out 20 pages of material a day, GamePro's 12 writer/editor staff put out 11-12 a day, and NP's 6 writer/editor staff put out 8 a day. (I don't count the editor in chief at any magazine, and the "Editorial Consultants" like Howard Lincoln were not writing or doing any serious editing work)
Nintendo Power was a skeleton crew compared to other videogame magazines of the era, and their writers had to output more than writers in the other mags. I'm surprised there wasn't more errors. Still no excuse for the BS that made it into the FF3 strategy guide.

>So are DKC's graphics what we should be expecting from the NU64, or is it only a taste and will it just get better?

Well, Stewart, as it turns out you should be expecting many very large polygons with murky blobs of color smeared over them, as well as coconut guns that fire in spurts.

We really haven't seen a single clear image of what N64 games will actually look like yet, have we? I suppose they've said several times that Killer Instinct and Cruis'n USA will be ported to the NU 64; that's probably the best information readers have at this point. No reader could really know yet that the normal appearance of an N64 game will be primarily characterized by low polygon counts and heavy, heavy use of bilinear texture filtering.

Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but there's something about the original Nintendo Ultra 64 name and logo that fits the console's design better.
