I just finished playing Ultimate DOOM and Sigil and thought I would revisit Marathon. I first played Marathon in 1995 on a Mac. I was about seven and remember seeing the angled box in CostCo.I liked it back then. I even got to play Marathon 2. Fast forward to today and I am giving up on this game. The Game play is stale. I hate the stupid mazes, crapy layered map that doesn't help, death traps, dying on a new level with no save, dumb as bricks AI, back tracking all the time, platforming puzzels. Some of the music is good and the art is OK. Compared to DOOM, System Shock, or Heretic, Marathon falls short. It doesn't have the same modern replayablity as other DOOM clones. In short, this game sucks.

It’s Autistic Doom.
Try Aleph One, it adds some QoL. Marathon has absolutely killer atmosphere and a good story if you have the patience to piece it together.
Marathon series is good but I agree the pacing can be complete shit. Definitely a major “where the fuck do I go?” game.
The biggest Marathon fans are macfags who grew up with it or halofags who bled halo dry.

>halofags who bled halo dry.
i tried that,i expected haloish DOOM,got a pretty bad game, though it is great that bungie gave source and the gamefiles for free.

There are definitely traces of Halo in there, but not as many as people expect. Protag basically is proto-chief.
If Bungie was still Bungie, I think they would find success rebooting Marathon as a 3deep5you sci-fi horror fps.

Marathon 1 is mazefuckery galore, I agree, but there are people that like that, the absolute lack of handholding on any form can be very appealing. Marathon 2 has much better, and straightforward level design, while Infinity has a mix of M1 and M2 styles.

>dying on a new level with no save
Just you wait until you reach Pfhoraphobia, no save terminals, no health stations, no ammo, and over a hundred enemies, traps everywhere, all in cramped corridor maze conditions. Die, and you won't just have to do the level again, but the previous level too. Have fun.

>dumb as bricks AI
Now that's just a wrong take. Marathon had the best enemy AI for it's time. Enemies were able to understand how doors and elevators worked, and could actively chase the player throughout the whole level, overcoming complex obstacles on the way, while in other games, enemies could barely follow the player to an adjacent room. I assume you're talking about the "friendly" Bobs, that tend to get in the way.

true,no denying that, just too much drags it down for me.
especially when theres so much i have not played and i have played almost nothing but "boomershooters" for the past like 2 years.

M2 was playable and I enjoyed it.

OK fine the AI was better than DOOM, but you can walk right up to enemies if they are not facing you.

M2 is great all around.

Infinity has a cool plot but the level design made me pull hairs.

Marathon is by far the best "where the fuck do i go" game. Getting that kind of thing right is hard, but Marathon nails it and leans into it to make a whole game out of it, combined with great shooter stuff.

Blindly disparaging popular games and ignoring their virtues is exactly as cringe as the inverse. Also pretty sure there's a script that lets you save anywhere.

OP's screenshot is Aleph One.

I'm not him, but his explanation did more than suffice to explain why he doesn't like Marathon. It isn't blindly.

It is when you arbitrarily laser-focus on its faults (or just aspects that aren't to your taste/you aren't good at), ignore its virtues, and use that to jump from "I don't enjoy it as much as I used to" to "it SUCKS" (and anyone who likes it isn't smart/honest enough to realize/admit it). Naming specific other games as better, because games have to compete with each other and be objectively ranked, just adds to the bait.

Yes, and the video rental store we went to sold DOS games on floppies. I learned they didn't work on a Mac.
