Super Metroid is pretty good, but it's not the best. If it used digitized photos for Samus' sprites it would be better. If it used pre-rendered 3D models it would be better still! And it certainly needs a lot of comical blood and gore. That would make it better, too. As it is, it's only... third best. Still pretty good though! Nice try, Japanese developers. You came close!

The helicopter looks kinda bad though. I suppose it's just sprites? It looks all chunkily pixellated like the landscape does, but maybe they artificially chunked up the original sprite, just so its potentially much higher detail level wouldn't stand out against the land? I don't know.

As a kid I never cared deeply about any racing game that wasn't F-Zero or Mario Kart, but now, while reading this magazine, I'm having a good time keeping up with the evolution of techniques for drawing 3D-looking tracks on a Super Nintendo. This Kyle Petty game is a standout: Apparently it actually applies the extremely fashionable SGI pre-rendering technique to a fully 3D world, rather than a 2D one, and then translates back to the 2D graphics the SNES can handle by simply drawing the 3D scenes as FMV sequences! Unfortunately the SNES cannot actually store enough high-quality video for the result to be very nice. In particular, it appears that the video of the track must play super slowly when you accelerate from a stop at the start of a race, which means the framerate of the animation actually begins at ZERO and only gradually increases from there! Maybe. That's mostly how it looks on YouTube, anyway, although it appears that they fudge over it a little by moving the car itself upward on the screen just a little at the very start, maybe to allow the very slowest bit of video playback to be edited out.

Uniracers obviously exhibits the superior method for applying DKC graphics technology to a racing game...

I deeply loved Final Fantasy as a kid and so I was very interested in the games. But I didn't know anything about the missing Japanese ones that Nintendo Power didn't tell me. If I hadn't gotten the magazine, then I wouldn't have known at all. As it is, my knowledge was very vague. I think I may have known which number each game originally had in Japan, and I may have known which console each Japanese game ran on. But other than that I knew absolutely nothing. I don't think they ever said what kind of game each one was, and if they showed screenshots of the missing ones at all (I don't remember any) then they were probably just a very few scattered ones of FFV I imagine. I don't think the magazine ever conveyed even the slightest detail of Japanese FFII or FFIII.

Of course the existence of the missing games became obvious at or before the FFVII release, since the "seven" was made public worldwide at that point. Sometime around then, I learned a little more about those games from other fans on the Internet. I was actually on a Final Fantasy mailing list for several years; at least a few people there had played FFV in some fashion, I think, though we didn't have knowledge of the possibility of emulation yet so they must have either known Japanese or used clumsy translation guides of some sort.

No, that's an actual port of the game into SNES code. There's a romhack patch to make it so you can play the port without putting in a code or getting to level 4. Notice the difference in the brick wall on the starting screen in the SNES version versus the brick wall in the original 2600 version.

Basic emulation of NES started in 1997, when most people were running 150-200MHz Pentiums. That's a 150-200Mhz CPU to emulate a 2Mhz CPU. And it was far from perfect or accurate. Hacks on top of hacks to get just werks going for the most popular games. Even then most were buggy. You won't get a console emulating another console until the DC era.
