Its... okay. The aesthetics, world design, and atmosphere are very good. But the combat leaves a lot to be desired. Mainly because your weapons suck dick and there's a TON of hitscanners (very tanky ones in the late game). And it's got RPG stats, so you start off extra inaccurate and weak. I would suggest at least giving it a try. And if you dont end up enjoying it, try it with the Weapons Of Rebellion mod. It doesnt completely change the game, it just adds new weapon modes that greatly improve the combat.

But, in my experience, there are various quirks (especially related to the engine's "physics") that are not really explained in the code comments or any of the manuals I've read. You have to figure out some things by trial & error. Reading func_msgboard QC threads and joining the Quake Mapping Discord is also useful.

First of all, merry Christmas anon and thanks for the map!

Made it saveless after a couple of tries until the final room where I died twice. I liked the aesthetic but it felt like the cyberdemons in the final fight were somewhat pointless given I could kill them before the archvile phase and rush to the exit anyway. The arachnotron + revenants part was a complete waste of time because they couldn't possibly kill the player + they were very easy to kill from far away and I liked the sniping revenant + goats chokepoint, felt like you had a harder iteration of it and decided to be merciful by adding some cover to misdirect the homing attacks.

Yeah, he needs to organize them better. As far as I know there are Derelict Facility, Sonic Mayhem, Wastewater Station, Outer Outer Base, Outpost N, Reservoir Stroggs, Cerberon Plaguemaker and Brutal Base (in development).
We'd have more if more people were interested in SPQ2 but sadly there are barely any new maps post-2000, and even fewer that are actually worthwhile.

Btw some maps you might enjoy that I didn't see mentioned last thread are The Widening Gyre, Castles of Stroggos, Citadel, Slight Mechanical Destruction, Operation Scorched Earth, On Sacred Ground, Monumental Misery (but on an easier difficulty), The Powersphere Quest, Defensive Measures and Deaf, Dumb and Blind. Most of them are much older than Quakeulf's stuff but still worth playing - as good as classic SPQ2 can get.

Playing Doom64 Reribution for the first time. Levels are pretty barebone - empty walls and abstract geometry. I didn't like quake-like monotonous browny textures. But gameplay is authentic, guns are very good, shotgun feels like real doom one. Enemy models are exceptionally good, only seen zombies, imps and pinkies do far, and all of them are very detailed and well animated. Difficulty seems to be quite low, on 3rd one there were no hard fights on first two levels.

From this guy, it was one of the first things googled threw up. If it wasn't for the links in the Quake Trilogy pastebin I wouldn't have found it, because the video didn't give a link to any downloads and neither did a google search. Google did give me its readme, though, and finding out it was made in Oct 1998 pointed it out in the zip (it was in the November section though, probably because it was released Oct 27 and so close to it).

Unironically I enjoy the way Descent did it (you have lives, if you die you esentially pistol-start but you keep all keys and progress and can pick up all of your weapons, but lose some secondaries - could be ammo in Doom's case). You also got a score penalty and lost all hostages you had picked up. If you died in a bad spot, you'd either have to try to scrounge up a skeleton arsenal from whatever you left over or just face the rape train with a shitty laser (the pistol equivalent). However, you can metagame it and if you expect to die because you're low health you can suicide in a safe spot and enter the bad room with a full arsenal and full health thanks to respawning.

Why Herrtic E2 beginning is so crap? Symmetric level, my ass. Is it getting better later on? There's nothing wrong with monster closets etc, don't be shy of having the good old "grab a key, skeletons come out" thing. The key is to try and do it in an unexpected way. Doom 2 is hit and miss the whole way through IMO. It has good levels and bad levels right through to the end. They kinda front-loaded all the best levels, just like Doom 1, but there are still good ones later on.

Inmost Dens, Tenements, and The Catacombs stand out for me. There are just a bunch of really shitty Petersen maps padding it out. Even stuff like Downtown and Industrial Zone gets shit on a lot but back in the day I thought they felt pretty fresh.

Playing Brutal Hexen and it is the most intense Hexen experience I remember. There is only fighter, crossbow is the second weapon, but it eats 8 bullets on a single shot, so always low on ammo. Gargoiles here, on large open areas, is fucking Heresiarch Luftvaffe, the horror from above, they are killing you from above with complete impunity and you can only run and hope that a stray one will go lower and green flask throw will catch it. Ettins and Centaurs are scripted to move faster and trying to approach you from behind. And ettins and gargoiles together are usually picrelated. Don't really care about gore, but this scripted behaviour was really nice and fresh.

Indeed it is getting much better, 4 maps starting with Ice Grotto are quite good, diverse textures, some architecture, quick gameplay, a lot if ammo and health. Especially Catacombs, there was a real fun with sliding down the river almost to the end of the level and sniping Sabreclaws on the way. Asassin gameplay is an easy mode though, crossbow is getting overpowered, sabreclaws need to be kicked in the face sometimes, but everything else just dies quickly from the distance, and Iron Liches are to slow to be dangerous, despite requiring 15 shots.

It has its shortcomings, but it does a lot of its own things and does the most it can with the given limitations, and manages to be good game. It has its own graphics and sound, which makes it feel rather distinct from the original and gives it a lot of unique character, feels almost slightly Quake-ish in tone and style, while still playing like classic Doom.

There's things I think it's worse off for by missing, like some of the monsters, but I had a hell of a good time playing it for the first time last year, and I've enjoyed it every time I've replayed it since. It's worth checking out if you like the original.

GzDoom is somewhat resource demanding, some reasons which make sense, some which kind of don't. There's been some steps to address this in recent times, they added GLES as a compat option to allow older and weaker machines run the game with better prestanda (in general, but some inherent limitations still apply).

Okay Doom frens. Half a dozen of you called me a moron for saying that I didn't like Doom II as much as the first game. I said that I didn't much care about the SSG, the new enemy types, or the level design. I also said that I was going to give it a fair shot and finally finish the whole game to see if I changed my mind. I got around to that sooner than I thought I would. I finished the game today. Well, did I change my mind? On some points. The SSG is still just a wide-shot, overpowered SG. I don't feel it adds much to the game, and the fact that's it's super useful means it's too easy to lean on it for the entire game. It's borderline game breaking at times. The new enemies grew on me. I hated the Arch-vile, but now I kind of like fighting them by playing cat and mouse. The Pain Elemental is still obnoxious especially in the Icon of Sin fight where its endless monster spawning is just a giant annoyance. The rest just add a lot of flavor that I've come to appreciate. I feel like that's a net positive. The level design. What a mixed bag. It wasn't as bad as i remembered it. I appreciate the city levels more now. There are some particularly shitty levels though and quite a few levels rely on gimmicks which are fun once, but I can't imagine enjoying replaying them over and over again. Map: 24 The Chasm where you have to walk tightropes being my least favorite. However, I did appreciate how "puzzly" some of these levels were. There were times where I had to stop and think to solve a level. The one with the teleporting Cyberdemon gave me a nice "Aha!" moment when I solved it in what I assume was the intended way. In short, I still like the first game better as a whole experience. Though I'm happy the content is there for modders. I was a bit too harsh on the game based on my childhood memories. It's better than I remember, but I don't see myself replaying the vanilla levels much. Map 28 and 29 make up for Icon of Sin.

Doom 2 can be mostly coasted with the SSG, and any moment that feels like it might not be enough gets drowned in saved up rockets or BFG shots.
Plutonia made me realize the chaingun or plasma rifle can be much safer to have out, they’re a great response to any surprise hitscan attack. Pistol starting it also realized my one, big concern with the weapon balance and that’s how much you get out of 40 cells using a BFG over the plasma rifle.

I gave Three's a Crowd a try and by map02 turned on respawn and map03 turned on god for a bit with full ammo and I still ran out of rockets on map04. By Map05 I was over it and turned on full fastweapons and infinite ammo for the rest of the level because oh look monster closet, monster closet, more monsters no ammo seriously was getting tiresome.

A lot of the challenge feels like it's in learning the map patterns and layouts and traps, but the actual encounters just feel like bullet sponges, mostly uninteresting and too long.

Also the cutscenes didn't play for me, which seems to be a big part of the production. I guess I need to either check the settings or use a different sourceport.

Yeah. D2TWID largely feels pretty authentic to the style, and development really was a bit brisk for the original Doom 2. I still think Doom 2 has a lot of really good maps, so together with the cool new monsters, it was a great product.
