I'd like to play a game with this level of story writing, dialogues, plot, OST, atmosphere in general. Would be grateful for any recommendations.
Feel free to discuss this franchise if you want.

What, Amy Hennig style sub-TV-grade garbo told in noninteractive cutscenes? Just play any modern game. They're ALL like this. Google what else Amy Hennig wrote to comprehend what you're actually dealing with here.

Try Soul Reaver 2.

Based. Her writing is such cliché dribble.

I finished both yesterday and was very impressed. I just want a similar vibe like these two, Shadow Man. Something overlooked.

Did you really play it? What was generic about that story?

>> No.8412896

>>8412890
The story isn't great, but the atmosphere is unique. There is not anything very similar to the isolation you feel in Soul Reaver. Maybe SMT Nocturne comes close, but it is a completely different game. One where story is mostly absent.

Yes, Nocturne is a good recommendation but I played it two times already. I wonder what else depicts desolation in a haunting manner. Genre doesn't really matter.

Well, the obvious answers (with games you've probably played) are:
>SH2
>Dark Souls (not retro, but is a masterpiece regardless of contrarian retards)
>horror games like dark corners of the earth and Condemned

Only recently replayed all Silent Hills one more time with great pleasure. I only finished Dark Souls once and that was barely because it was difficult or maybe I just played like an idiot. What I remembered from modern games and slightly similar atmosphere is Code Vein. I finished it once, much less difficult than Dark Souls.
DCoTE is great but I remember it being a very slow game in terms of movements and I'd like something a little bit "free". Condemned is one of my favorite games and I will definitely replay it but not now. It's very dark and bloody and I am already not feeling too cheerful recently.
Thank you very much anyway.

I'll wait for something like well made Vampire Hunter D adaptation in a cryo chamber. Have a good day.

I played the PS1 version on release and was the biggest LoK fan for a while. That is because I was 13 and thought that cutscenes were the essense of video game storytelling. To answer your question, dark fantasy about vampires with biblical names is what's generic.

>> No.8412974

>>8412972
I only played it now despite owning PS1 and knowing about since release. Don't how did that happen.
Would you like to recommend something that fits your preferences more but has the same vibe?

Any old From Software game. Echo Night games, Kuon, King's Field. Long before Dark Souls and even Miyazaki, From have been the poets of ruin and decline.

King's Field is something that I never played. Does this series requre a lot of learning and patience or is it possible to walk through it without enduring too much pressure?
Both Echo Nights and Kuon are finished and I remember them very well. Very enjoyable and atmospheric. Thank you.

The same vibe as in, desolation, devastation, and decline? Or as in, vampire superheroes? The latter are not my thing, but for the former look no further than the likes of Demon's Crest. The whole demon-world series (Ghosts 'n Goblins and its sequels and the Gargoyle's Quest games) thrive on brutal desolation of the demonic world despite being superficially cartoony. The whole concept of the demon-town (makaimura - the original name of the series) is about this. Mainline GnG games are action/platformers, but Demon's Crest is even in the same genre as Soul Reaver (action/adventure), albeit in 2d. The game's more cartoony, but also a much better game.

Planescape Torment

And of course, remember to go back and play the original Blood Omen.

Learning and patience it is. These are open-ended, slow, methodical, punishing games in the tradition of old Japanese crpgs.
If you're looking for some dark fantasy but without a challenge, why not just read Berserk?

>>8412994
I don't mind challenge, just need the right mood for it. Thank you for the information, I'm very intrigued by Demon's Crest and King's Field series, will try it very soon.
Thanks everyone.

The Blood Omen games as well.
Maybe Bloodrayne.
King's Field already been mentioned but seconding. Also Shadow Tower.
Bloodborne also obvious. Demon's Souls etc.
Nightmare Creatures being the PS1 equivalent.
You may try Castlevania 64. Maybe also the later 3D games but they're more like DMC/GoW clones.
Since I mentioned GoW, Rygar on PS2 is the precursor but more adventure.
Obviously DMC1 has top tier atmosphere, as do the original Resident Evil games. I'd just recommend all those classic survival horror, have you played Alone in the dark 4, Fatal Frame, Haunting Ground, etc.
The Ueda games, Ico, SOTC, Guardian, and their rip-offs.
Darksiders is alright but it's too comics/vulgar in its art style. Not a fan.
There's Pandora's Tower that came out on Wii, you can emulate via Dolphin with a controller. Good 3D Castlevania/Zelda like with dark aesthetics.
Consider the classic Tomb Raider games. They lack the more Gothic/darker elements but sense of exploration, isolation and adventure are the best.
I also like Rune (vikings) and American McGee Alice, came out at a time when PC could still have exclusive and unique takes on adventure platforming.
PC adventure game called Dark Earth has a beautiful dark fantasy atmosphere.
Different vibe/genre but the Metroid Prime series.
If you like 2D check out Blasphemous it's a recent indie vanialike with great art design.

Even more recommendations today, it is unexpected. Even though I played almost all mentioned games there are some that I missed out on for whatever reason. Thank you very much, this is a good board.

>much less emphasis on the narrative though
Much MORE emphasis on narrative, you mean. It just isn't done through interactive means. Because it's a video game and not a movie, so it tells the story with gameplay.

Darksiders 2 has more of what OP was asking for . Some prefer the first for darker atmosphere. But the feeling of being alone is very apparent.

You know what? Deus Ex isn't exactly what you may think you want but give it a try. And Human Revolution is quite an atmosphere of alone cold future.
