As for a controller you are right, however you can get the poly mega controller for quite cheap and it works well enough

Had a lot of fun with the Intellivision. The buttons and plastic custom game templates that slid over them were really nice. Playing on one of these is like playing a video game with a controller made of bubble wrap. It's kind of funny that the first time I played a Mario game was Donkey Kong on this baby. Other fond game memories were Horse Racing, Armor Battle, and Lock 'N' Chase.

I think it could be possible to transfer a genesis d-pad to the game gear but would involve a decent amount of cutting and fabrication but it would be worth it. Nes and gameboy also have a mushy d-pad compared to snes.
