I agree, it should have had an RPG style leveling system, had a more complex map like Metroid, maybe some Tetris-like bonus games, been an FPS, and had more playable characters like the X-Men. They really dropped the ball by delivering only what it set out to be.

I enjoyed this two-page assault on Sega. But it's sad to see even Nintendo Power so readily conceding that Sewer Shark has "dazzling visuals" that Star Fox cannot compete with.

I like how they point out that the SNES has a better signal-to-noise ratio in its audio system than the Genesis and even that it consumes less electrical power. Anything to help shore up their defense of that CPU Clock gap!

It's not. The retards at Tyco thought they could somehow control the clock from the controller port. The end product just has an adjustable speed slow-mo that presses the pause button rapidly. It states in the manual it won't work for games that have no pause button or use the pause button for menus. It does have all the other features claimed, but this special slow-mo feature was never possible and didn't happen. I had no idea somebody so blatantly cloned F-Zero. Not that a Mode 7 racing game is ever going to look entirely different from F-Zero, but the first F1-ROC did have its own camera angle and track borders at least.

Maybe if the hardware had intercepted both controller signals and communication with the game cartridge (like a Game Genie does) it could have done something more? I guess even that's pretty unlikely.

The only way it could possibly work is if they had a device that plugged in between the cartridge and the slot that actually intercepted all code being sent and injected a bunch of NOP codes in-between each line of actual code. But that still wouldn't work since the games are all timing dependent and such an action would break the timing outright. You would have characters walking through walls, jumping half the screen, and graphics getting garbled all over the place. Line-based palette changes would be completely fucked.

Wasn't likely to be Toshisada Nobuhara, he usually did more colorful and psychedelic stuff. Orange Nakamura was usually more cartoonish. Kevin Brockschmidt is far too cartoony to fit. The Turrican artwork looks more like Jim Frisino. It looks very much like the same artist who did alot of the Nester artwork earlier on, so it's probably either Hiroko Nagami or Nob-Rin Takagi.
