It blows FF7 out of the water any day. Chrono Trigger has a lot of charm to it, and was innovative for letting you combine attacks and have monster battles that you could avoid and see instead of random floor tiles that launch you into a battle. And there was plenty of replay value because of the alternate endings.

FF7 is way more worthy of the hype it gets than Chrono Trigger. Bigger, longer game with a better story, better music (and more of it), tons of side content that is optional, etc.

Chrono Trigger is good, perhaps even a great game (especially considering the trash that gets released nowadays). But it's very short, very linear, almost no side content, has a few good tracks, a story thats good and simple but almost too simple, and way too easy. It was made by a star-studded production team and it shows considering how safe and easy it is.

It's a meme at this point but it's pretty much THE rpg for people who hate rpgs. It gets a pass for being on the 35 year old+ boomer console, so they give it nostalgia points (whereas they fucking loathed the first 3D generation of ps1 and n64). Everything in this paragraph seems equally true for FF6, since the boomerfags who like CT also like FF6 (which released on snes) and often claim them as the only 2 good jrpgs despite not playing any others. But I can't talk much about FF6 since I haven't played it yet. But my impression isn't good based on the type of people who praise it.

The only one of those that's true is "bigger", and that doesn't really matter because it means you have to grind for a month to defeat the optional endbosses to get KOTR materia which is what you need to damage the optional endbosses - or spend a month breeding Chocobos.
Chrono Trigger doesn't have anything annoying like that, the entire game is straight forward, and yet still has tons of hidden shit, AND has a new game + mode where you can unlock like 10 different endings.

Also FF7 has the stupidest horseshit pointlessly convoluted storyline ever. I re played it like 3 or 4 times and I still don't remember what the fuck was Sephiroths back story or motivation, other than that he finds clones of himself and goes berserk and tries to blow up the planet.
CT is much more comfy, a bunch of teens accidentally discover time travel, and the more they try to fix the shit they caused, the worse the cause and effect becomes until they have to prevent the literal coming armageddon.

>>8218635
>i want to play an rpg but i dont want the random battles.

rpg is about role playing, not about beating up the same blue goblin after taking 5 steps in any direction ad infinitum. CT has great balance in this in that you can avoid battles if you want to.

>>8218605
>it's very short,
This is just not true.

>very linear
That's a stable of the genre, and so was FF7 for that matter.

>almost no side content,
Oh I am laffin'. Once Queen Zeal launches her hole-in-time christmas tree shaped Star Destroyer, the entire game becomes open ended. You can visit the grave of Frog's old comrade, turn a desert back into a giant forest, visit the sunken ruins of a dinosaur castle from 65 million BC, recharge a magical stone with a million year of sunlight, have Marle reconcile with her parents and learn why the chancellor is corrupt, fix the legs of Lucca's mom, get one of the games bosses to join you, visit the factory where Robo was made, and that's just from the top of my head. Without counting the fact that you can fight the end boss in like 3 different ways, have every character learn optional combo moves together, and you can re-play the game to permanently max out everyones stat or to get a dozen different endings by finishing the game at an earlier point of the story, with more severe consequences (like humans being extinct and the planet being populated by humanoid lizard-saurs).

This isn't fanboying it's the truth.

chrono trigger's ability to have you go from medieval not-europe to flintstones pre-history to post-apocalyptic hellworld and have it all flow is incredible. i'm not sure it has a "good story" but the blend of story and gameplay is second to none. horii and sakaguchi were behind pretty much all the biggest and most beloved JRPGs at the time and their collaboration paid off in spades
unfortuantely i don't think it's very fun. yes it's cool when one guy shoots lasers at another guy's sword but it's not an interesting tactical decision. you use that to shred the basic enemies and then all the bosses are "puzzles" but the solution is glaringly obvious most of the time.
there's a lot of good in chrono trigger but whenever someone calls it THE BEST RPG EVER MADE i can tell they don't play many games

>> No.8220719

It is a great game. It stands out to this day as unique for reasons that have been stated ad infinitum, but I do think it is overrated. I think it was surpassed by several other games on the same console, in particular some action RPGs that came out toward the end of the SNES's life. Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Tales of Phantasia, Seiken Densetsu 3, I would even say Terranigma. Star Ocean surpassed in terms of presentation. Romancing SaGa, Live A Live, and Treasure of the Rudras all surpassed it in terms of RPG gameplay. None of this really detracts from it. All of those games have their reasons for standing out, but so does Chrono Trigger.

Sephiroth went insane when he discovered at the Shin-Ra Mansion that he was created by Hojo in a laboratory and that his "mother" was Jenova, who all people at Shin-Ra believed was one of the Ancients, the original race of the Planet.

He also wasn't planning on destroying the planet, you dense fuck, his plan was to summon Meteor to hit the planet on the Northen Crater to absorb the massive amount of Lifestream the Planet would release to "heal" from the collision and obtain Godhood.
