8199828 No.8199828 [Reply] [Original]

And we are back with the monthly (?) KF thread, feel free to discuss anything KF related (ST and others are more than welcome)
I'm currently replying the trilogy starting from KF jp, i'll post some screenshot along the way

October is a fine time to play either Shadow Tower game.

Every month is good for that, though.

playing a horror game on Spooktober adds an extra feeling of horror. Only available once in a year

btw, i'm wondering if jap-anon is gonna report himself. I remember his long analysis on a similar game called Hungry Ghosts or something like that.

It depends, the controls are pretty easy to learn (they are similar to Doom on the ps1) the combat is also very barebone, you swing your sword/step back/repeat with little to none rpg elements, what could be daunting for a 1st time player is how cryptic the game could be; mind you i think that all the KF games can be beaten without any guides, but you will need to explore everything and always check for any potential secret door. They are truly unique experiences, i'd highly recommend you to try KF2 if you wants to start with the ps1 trilogy or jump straight ahead to kf4 if you'd like a more "modern" game.

I played KF1 and KF4. KF1's last couple levels are pure insanity, but I liked it overall.
KF4 on the other hand is incredible, it instantly became one of my all time favourites. It might sound cringy, but stepping into the holy forest for the first time made me feel like a kid again

Oh hi.
I just started King’s Field (2). I’m surprised at how not-hard it is. Even wrestling with the controls on Vita isn’t too bad. Fuck this pole arm cunt in the village though. I’m fairly certain it’s glitching because it seems like he’s hitting me multiple times, impossibly fast.

they're very open, but each game is different
KF1 has selfcontained levels you progress through linearly (with only very few reasons to backtrack sometimes), but each level has a nonlinear design
KF2 and KF4 are the most interconnected, they have a huge, intricate dungeon with many shortcuts
KF3 is the closest to modern open-world games with a big, flat overworld and individual dungeons you can access from there

What's the better King's Field game for PS1 (meaning level design, gameplay, quality of life, etc.? Or should I just start with 1 and stop making zoomer-like questions)? Are there some differences between those titles and Shadow Tower, gameplay-wise? I've always thought about playing these, maybe it's time. And before someone recommends King's Field IV or Shadow Tower Abyss, I know those are regarded as some of the best in the bunch, but it doesn't feel right to me to start that far into the series, let alone the fact I'm not interested in emulating PS2 at the moment. Thanks in advance for any reply about these two questions, or any input at all.

>> No.8206152

>>8205973
The first three KF's story is connected, so you should start with the japanese first one (with the english patch), and if you liked it, you can proceed to the - imo much harder - sequels.
>Are there some differences between those titles and Shadow Tower, gameplay-wise?
There's a lot actually, you have to manually raise your shield whereas in KF shields are just an item you equip and it automatically absorbs some of the damage. Also, there's a very cruel weapon degradation system, that's not a thing in KF games (except in KF4, but it's not cruel at all). Economy is weird too, you use your health points to buy stuff and you can sell stuff to get more health.
>it doesn't feel right to me to start that far into the series
just in case you change your mind about ps2 emulation, KF4 and STA are completely unrelated to their prequels in terms of story, so playing those first won't ruin your experience with the previous games

>> No.8206201

>>8206152
Thank you very much, this was helpful. I now have KF1, KF2, KF3 Pilot Style and KF3. I think I'll play these in the order I've just mentioned; in the future I will most likely fiddle with PCSX2 so I won't forget about KF4 and STA.

>> No.8206206

You can skip KF3 pilot, it's just a shorter version of kf 3

That's good to know, thanks again. So far I'm loving the first one, it's dungeon crawling at its finest. I didn't feel this way since the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks from the 80s, or Ultima and Wizardry's approach to the genre (even though they don't exactly classify as such). In fact, this is way more action oriented and there's less bookkeeping, if that makes sense. Very interesting.

I started with Shadow Tower and I liked it a lot. Working backwards from Shadow Tower is weird though, because it's by far the hardest entry in the series. On the other hand, it's also the most satisfying IMO. Hitting enemies feels great, there's real weight in the combat that is difficult to articulate. Not even Shadow Tower Abyss recreated that feeling.

Is there a mod for KF1 that let's you move/turn your character faster than 1MPH? As much as I want to enjoy the game, the movement speed is absolute shit.

Doesn't look like there's a way to cap FPS in King's Field on emulators? Trying to play II just made my head hurt. The framerate jumping around was disorienting and made actual mechanics break. Pretty annoying.

the PAL version of KF2 is capped at 17fps whereas the american isn't, so it's a lot better for emulation

I just got the keeper’s map in King’s Field. Does north on the compass relate to the top of the map? This doesn’t seem to match up. I’m right outside the dragon temple and I can’t seem to quite sus where that is on the map.
