Because of the remake, which seemed pretty bad, I finally played ActRaiser for the first time ever (I always started witht eh second game and dropped it soon after), and what a nice game this is. Jumping and attacking is a bit silly and sticky, but it's still great and moderately challenging and ridiculously varied. Every single fucking level has its own tileset, holy shit lmao.

I wish there were more puzzles in the sim sections. The sim part feels like a tutorial stage of a bigger game. They mostly just tell you what to do, like, go rain on the desert, go blow on the windmills. Only a few puzzles are actually left for you to discover.

I fucking with there was no landing attack that locks you in place while doing the worst attack. Fucking attack overhead. Keep fucking attacking overhead like you do when jumping or standing. The worst thing to happen to you is to attack at the moment of landing because it enables this ridiculous little stab that does nothing. FUCK.

enable cheats on your emulator and just turn on Professional mode, unless you already unlocked it by beating the game.

Then just have fun with the platforming challenge

After completing the game once, an extra mode "Professional!" is revealed. This is every Act back-to-back with no Sim Modes. The Master begins with maximum health, but all enemies have double health.

One source says:
>Complete the game, then press [Up] or [Down]x2 at the title screen. An option for professional mode will appear below the "New Game" selection. In this mode, your character has no magic and regular monsters are twice as hard to kill.

In the Euro version they call it action mode and it has difficulty settings, it's a bit different than Professional US mode

Well, I certainly don't want that. Action stages were alright but only in conjunction with the sim mode. On its own, ActRaiser would be a very forgettable action-platformer, I'd say.

What I am saying is that Professional mode sounds worthless and the opposite of what I enjoyed about the game. It's a very sub-par action-platformer, in my opinion. It's only fun when I have a new spell that two guys on a boat found on an island and gave me because I'm their favourite god.

Nah ActRaiser 2 is a good platformer overall. One of the major sources of hatred for it was the challenging difficulty from start to finish. It got a reputation for being ''impossible'' and ''unfair'', it wasn't of course, very beatable game but you had to memorize sections and enemies quite a bit.

Quit playing ActRaiser 1 without the sim parts. Just go play 2, which probably filtered your dumb shitposting ass.

While its one of the better looking SNES games, with far more ambition, I agree on other anon's premise: Its a mediocre action platformer.
While the moveset has improved, the graphics and the ambition.... ActRaiser 1 works because of how the Sim mode breaks up the stages, to create a nice blend of a experience.

2 really lacks that. It also means 1 will have people who don't play action platformers normally, but won't play 2 once they realize there isn't the kind of game they wanted.
1 also gets played because its a Launch game for the SNES, which means it ends up in more lists.

>aside from the first stage looking like shit
All of the action stages look like shit. Pre-rendered graphics like it's fucking Donkey Kong Country on a GBA. I witnessed a rolling bolder with TWO frames of animation. It was just flipflopping back and forth. I couldn't stop laughing.
The town building segments have been padded out with a bunch of shitty story, each town has a generic anime hero that you use in the BRAND NEW tower defense RTS sections, which are the total opposite of fun.
Building up Filmore is particularly bad since it takes you out of the game every 30 seconds for another tutorial, it's annoying as hell.
Pass on it and buy it if it goes on sale if you absolutely must try it.

people complaining about the graphics, but i enjoy dracula X chronicles, so there i guess.

no, this one is specially gay. he mentions putting stuff in his mouth several times, he has some cheeky expression that looks borderline flirty and his outfit has a short billowing skirt, it has a low neckline which emphasizes his "cleavage" and it makes a point of showing his midriff.
also his legs are pointing inward, it's all very feminine stuff. it's distractingly erotic compared to every other character, not sure why it was necessary to make the angel into a sissy
this guy looks normal so it has nothing to do with the style

You think so? Because to me it seems that I disliked action stages in ActRaiser precisely because I've played and beaten numerous action games that were vastly superior to it.
