The PC is always credited with having the best first-person shooters, but most PC shooters fail to capture me. Quake series is great, but the other usual suspects like Duke and Half-Life grow tiresome. Are they any actual, good hidden gem shooters on the PC other than the typical shit that gets thrown around /vr/ like Chasm and NOLF?

Try the Riddick games. If not, maybe just FPS aren't you kind of game, because I can't think of a single console-only FPS that's better than anything the PC has to offer, save for maybe Goldeneye (which is also better on PC because 60fps and mouse controls).

I'm sort of in a similar situation. You expect to encounter so many classics and seems like outside of the big names the selection is weirdly kind of eh. The genre took a nose dive in the early 2000s.

Half-Life is a terrible game. There is no reason you's inherently like Half-Life just because you like Quake, given that they have an entirely different design and focus. Half-Life is very stilted and awkward and the cinematic elements make it less replayable. It's also sinfully ugly outside of some decent environmental animations.

I wouldn't say the genre took a nosedive in the early 2000s. More like the second half where seemingly every other PC game was a FPS. In hindsight you could see the trend starting in the early 2000s, but it didn't really become apparent until 2006 or so where there were so many uninspiring FPS games being pumped out.

Here is where I have to give the Sam games some credit: You can't just 'movement tech' yourself away from the enemies in Sam, unlike Painkiller's simple "bunny hopping" that makes you faster than everything.

Renegade is fucking jank and rushed to all hell* but it has one of the most unique multiplayer concepts I've ever witnessed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9PeSdlZgp0

*It was heavily rushed. About 6 months out from launch they made a commando stealth game where you could control units to cause distractions or clear blockages, but then EA demanded it become more like Call of Duty once it showed its popularity. It still has some remnants, there are a few missions where if you go pistol only, you can literally do the entire mission as a stealth mission. Chateau and Stowaways are still designed as stealth missions, apparently never getting the redesign that other levels got.
