Nah, this era isn't quite over until issue 31. That's the last issue with the classic layout. From 32 onwards, they start to separate the games by platform instead of lumping them all together. That's also the issue they start the SMB and Zelda comics. Now Playing also gains Bob and George. It stays like that until somewhere in the 40's, when SMB and Zelda get replaced with a Star Fox comic, and they add in the Power Challenges section.

Rocky - American Sammy
What you see here is pretty much the only info about this game. There was a Rocky game by Sega for the Master System, but this version never saw the light of day, or even screenshots.

Mr. Gimmick AKA Gimmick! - Sunsoft
Sunsoft of America declined to bring this one over, thinking the cutesy graphics wouldn't sell in the US. This was after they already told NP they were going to do it. Got a release in Scandinavia, but nowhere else outside of Japan. Only the title screen is in moonrunes, but a fan translation of the title screen exists.

Secret Ties - Vic Tokai
Remember that 3rd Golgo 13 game mentioned before? Well, this is what it really was. Someone at Vic Tokai must have loved the Golgo 13 mangaka, since they decided to make a videogame for another series he did called Master Thief Sugar. It was popular for a brief moment back in the 70's in Japan, but no one else would have known about it. The game was completed and the US port was made ready to go, then both versions were cancelled at the last minute. The US prototype was found and dumped, but still no sign of the Japanese version.

Starting with the next thread, I'll be covering all the announced but unreleased Game Boy games covered from the start of NP up until the current issues. I'll start covering the SNES games when we reach issue 40. I need to do something, since the number of announced but unreleased NES games really starts to drop off. Nothing new gets announced that doesn't get released until issue 34. It only gets quieter from then on.

Whoops, I forgot they started doing the Challenges on the cards they had in the back of the mag starting in 41. In issue 44 they moved it into the magazine proper. Also it was Rob and George, and they were pulled out after issue 43 since the readers didn't like the "roger and ebert" shtick.

Issues 32-43 - SMB/Zelda Comics and Rob and George era
Issues 44-55 - Star Fox Comic era

Issue 68 is when the magazine went to shit. The classic Classified Information manila envelope look got replaced with generic 90's black and grey edgefest shit, and most of the magazine started using terrible layouts that are rough on the eyes. Logo got redesigned, and the classic red stripe at the bottom of the cover started changing colors.

Meanwhile, the dealers are showing that there isn't much intersection between people who enjoy car-racing games and people who respond to Nintendo Power's popularity polls. Also there are some game show licenses in there? Maybe parents bought those because they recognized the shows' names, and their children merely tolerated them.

I don't remember reading this bit about backward compatibility as a kid. I guess it didn't mean much to me then, since as the magazine says, we already had an NES so we didn't need another one. I mean I don't especially need one today either, but now I think this feature would be cool!

Wow the first SNES ratings chart has SimCity actually beating Mario in Theme & Fun! Yet Mario somehow has the best graphics & sound of all SNES games yet to exist??? Come on Nintendo raters. I guess I could probably have seen that already if I'd actually played the prototype ROM file I think I downloaded from one of those Gigaleak threads a while ago, instead of just throwing it pointlessly into my hoard and then forgetting about it. Also there are other version-related discrepancies visible in Nintendo Power that I hadn't noticed, such as the ordering of the stages.

No word on the "thawing" ice tendrils though.
