I think its just some minor changes like home console type settings, like set lives or something. Idk, gigachad aes collector on here probably knows which ones have the differences. I think its mostly the later releases. I wanna say the metal slugs may be one of em, not sure if the combat school was added in the aes releases first or the Neogeo CD versions.

Mix of eBay and NG collector groups. eBay is a pretty safe bet for MVS, since it’s easier to spot fakes and no legit reason for sellers not to provide board pics. For AES you can still get legit copies on eBay for most things but need more knowledge of what to look for. Big ticket stuff I’ll only get from other collectors. Don’t care about the new Visco repros coming out, but have Xenocrisis coming and on year 4 or 5 of waiting for AES Kraut Busters. Not buying shit from NG Dev ever again until it’s proven they can deliver in a reasonable time frame.

Get a Neo Geo 1 slot from Aliexpress, 161 in 1 and look into superguns. You should be able to get a setup for under 150 if you shop around. If you're serious I'd suggest getting a 1 slot sooner than later, the prices are starting rise and the surplus from china is starting to dry up.
If you want to collect real carts, you should be able to get most of the good titles for 50-100 dollars while most of the KOFs can be found for 50 or less.

If you know Japanese (or are at least willing to learn) this is the best choice. The games are cheap and mostly kept in great condition. But I buy only what I want to play. Buying in bulk pretty much means you're getting 90% trash like those pachinko games and whatnot.
I only wish I could just go to Japan to get some games in person (maybe there's a good online store too?). Ebay sucks most of the time, because all of the offers are made for gaijins who don't know the real prices and they're inflated there too. Games that go for 1000 JPY max are sold for over 20 dollars if they're in good condition.

i always wondered, while obviously the big cities in Japland are all english friendly, most of their game stores are picked clean of the good shit and/or their prices are boosted up a bit cause of foreigners, but what if you were to go out into the sticks to some of the small towns? Surely some of those not touched by outsiders and frequented by locals must still have some small independent gaming/collectibles/thrift shops where the prices and stock must be more appealing still, even if they wouldnt have the mass quantities of the big city coming it and of course you would need to be much more familiar with ACTUAL Japan rather then the tourist cities and how to really navigate the language.

The whole point of many personal connections going way back, like WAAAY back, were because some weirdo had a personal interest in something niche that only really appealed to them or a small community of other weirdos. Talking collecting shit like the remains of animals with abnormalities or grotesque torture instruments and other kinds of shit most people would not have a normal interest in.

If someone is collecting for some outdated system you can emulate or for some games that have no perceived "value" on a platform from the 70s, these people are well aware what they are spending their money on, you dont gotta be a faggot and constantly bring it up to them. Its their personal weird money sink cause they like it and it probably means something to them, so kindly neck yourself and leave them to it.

Well, if you go to Super Potato in Akihabara then don't be surprised that the prices are high, it's THE retro games store after all. There are a lot of so called tourist traps.
But from my experience, even if you go to Bookoffs and similar stores in big cities you can find some pretty good games for quite cheap. I went to a Bookoff in the middle of Kyoto and found a whole bin of mecha games for the PS1 and PS2, 100 yen each. And good stuff at that, ACE, SRW, etc. Probably someone's collection.
The thing is, it's really hard to tell what is rare in Japan unless you know the market better. You can find games that are rare and fetch ridiculous prices in the West to be really abundant and sold for a few hundred yen in nearly perfect condition.
As you said, it's probably better to check some less popular shops too. You don't have to go all the way out into the mountains or whatever, 1 hour by train from the center of Tokyo should be enough to get away from the tourist spots.
Man, how I want to go back.

What stood out to me though, when I went to Yodobashi Camera there was a PC software department and it was full of Office, antivirus software, Windows, etc. And among that were boxes of FFXIV and DQX. The video games department was all console games, PC nowhere to be seen.

Theres a bunch of really interesting 90s/early 2000s PC games from Japan/China/Korea that little is even known of which really fires my synapses as a 90s pc game collector. Like I did manage to get a PC port of Gunstar Heroes from Japan that very few sites seem to know exists and it even advertises more pc ports like Rent-A-Hero and Alien Soldier. Ive seen some ebay listings out of my price range for essentially share-ware/free-ware Mac game collections, but they look to be made by Japanese indie devs, so im sure thats chock-full of obscure goodness. Then you have shit like those stupid expensive releases like Garage and Eastern Mind. Since a lot of older boxes don't look perfect lined up next to each other because of years of natural shelf-wear, the box protectors help them look very uniform/consistent. And damage to the boxes are less noticeable with the protectors on it too, as well as holding the structure together if the box is crushed at all. I'd personally recommend it.

To answer the question on why it's so rare, I genuinely have never seen it garage sailing in all the years i've continued to do it. Maybe like 20 copies of GTAIII, San Andreas, and Vice City each, very few for Liberty City Stories, and literally none for Vice City Stories.

Just because it's listed for $100 doesn't mean it sells for $100. I can find you a ton of Mario 64s and other extremely common games that are listed for $100 too. I think you're just being dramatic in this case because I'm pretty sure that game is actually uncommon + desirable. And this is coming from someone who wouldn't pay for games in this market either.

I always get the itch to start a new collection but then I remember how useless it felt and how long it took to sell them all on ebay and I bury that idea deep inside my head. the whole "hunting" aspect was a really nice hobby but thats because most of the top games used to be 10-20$ cib 15-20 years ago on ebay. nowadays I would literally pay 100-200$ for the same games in a worse condition.

I feel really bad for the people wanting to start their collection nowadays.

I sold a good chunk of my collection between 2018-2020 literally just before the covid spike because i needed the money and was sick of collecting, just had a room filled with games i didn't play anymore and was going through a bit of an transitionary phase in my life where i wanted to go more minimal. I don't regret the decision but it does suck that i now have to pay out the ass for things i was hoping i'd be able to re-buy at a later date for maybe cheaper prices if not the same price.
The most painful things i sold were things like Breath Of Fire IV, Tales Of Destiny, Silent Hill, and my Vita collection. seriously though wtf when did everyone all of a sudden become collectors.

I'm glad I've never had any real attraction to the idea of "collecting". I had a bunch of games as a kid, and one day while I was at university my mom decided to sell them all off (she asked first).

Now, if I'd kept them, I probably could've made some decent money off them today, so that stings a little. Lots of retards out there willing to pay top dollar for Nintendo shit now. I even had Virtua Racing and Thunder Force IV for the Mega Drive.

But in terms of actually having them around? I've never missed them. I've got all the games I had as a kid, and a lot more, stored on microSD cards the size of a fingernail. I don't have to rifle through shelves, only to find out I misplaced the disc in another case because I was lazy.

These days all I have lying around are a copy of Kato and Ken that came with my Famicom I used once for testing, A copy of Sonic the Hedgehog for the same reason, and Seaman 2 as well as Police 9/11 because they both came with PS2 peripherals I wanted (A seaman compatible mic, and a police 9/11 compatible camera, respectively). Maybe if I went through my old CD stacks I might find a copy of Warioware for the Wii between some old demo discs. But none of these games are even used, I don't see the point when I can just use flashcarts and ODEs.

The one thing I miss from boxed games is looking through the manual, I guess. It'd be nice to have some online resource for those given it helps with game progression sometimes, but the ones out there seem pretty lacking.

I feel the same as him and it is a little bit sad. But changing your mindset helps make it less sad. Modern life demands that all your leisure time be spent in front of either a phone screen or a computer screen. To be infinitely distracted by endless choices. Browsing movies on Netflix for hours or looking at a full romset unable to choose something to play for more than a few minutes. I feel far more satisfied when I can get away from all this crap and focus on something. I do use emulators on my Android TV box instead of my PC but I put one game on there at a time and set aside time to play. By sitting down with a controller in my hand and looking at my TV I'm able to focus on what I want to do. I won't be tempted to answer messages from anybody. I won't be tempted to come here and be an asshole to somebody because they have a different opinion than me. I can enjoy playing a game and have fun. That's also why I appreciate original hardware. Having a shitload of devices that can play anything makes me appreciate purpose built machines more. The simplicity of it makes me happy.
