>How much worse will the cores that don't require an SDRAM module run if you don't have one installed?
>Will the Sega Saturn core be able to surpass software emulators in terms of accuracy/compatibility or will it just be an passable recreation but with the benefit of less latency? Aside from the garbled audio it looks fairly promising so far, at least when it comes to Bug and Earthworm Jim 2. Not holding my breath until I see some footage of heavier 3D games like Daytona, Virtual On or Powerslave though, I hear that the DE10-Nano might not be on that level.

1. Nah, the only advantage is to stack the boards and make the whole thing more compact, less tentacular.

2.Indeed some cores can run with the in board DDR3 ram, but it's just not worth cause the number of cores using is really limited, so you better buy a SDRAM

3. It's easier to make more accurate emulation with FPGA, just think like the technology itself make the job easier to optimize, of course you still need the skill but one should also acknowledge with this technology makes things different.
So yeah Saturn core in the end will be more accurate.
How much time is gonna take ? I don't know but way less than it took for software emulation on PC to be at the current point.

4. No Idea for that one

Just a quick reminder that your 4ghz gayming pc still can't run logic simulations in real-time and never will.

>"Presently, GateBoy runs at roughly 6-8 frames per second on a modern 4GHz CPU. As it turns out, emulating all those gates and the various clock phases at play in the DMG-01 takes plenty of processing power. However, compilation optimizations do a lot of heavy lifting, so in some regards, GateBoy runs impressively quickly for what it is."

>Are there any functional advantages to using the official USB daughterboard or will I be fine just plugging a splitter or powered hub into the DE10 Nano's USB OTG port?
No, you can use any USB 2 capable hub. (If you want to use HDD's make sure to use an external powered hub)
>How much worse will the cores that don't require an SDRAM module run if you don't have one installed?
Not that much ... either they work without the SDRAM or they don't.
Most cores on the MiSTer are more like hardware emulators. So the accuracy/compatibility can vary from core to core. One thing that can be guaranteed is the deterministic behavior of the cores so no matter what the video/sound/inputs/... will always behave the same way without jitter or other stuttering (unless the emulated system does it in that place due to hardware limitations)

Saying that a logic simulation is equivalent to emulation is like saying a tranny is equivalent to woman.

I'll guess your pc can't handle a real woman, or only with 6-8 frames. The only thing that it can handle is a cut down and abstract version of a woman. But I don't think you will ever know the difference, maybe it to academic for zoomers and room temp IQ people :^)

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.
FPGA gaming sounds cool and all, but whether or not it lives up to all the promises of high accuracy and low latency obviously depends on how well-made the cores are and whether or not the hardware they run on can cut the mustard. I don't care that much about accuracy so long as the games run but I see it's importance for preservationists and homebrew developers.
There might also be situations/setups where the differences aren't as important; PC emulators feel pretty damn responsive when I'm using the VGA CRT and there are definitely games where reaction speed isn't super important.
I'm pretty sold on the concept, but I'm not surprised that there are people who write FPGA consoles as placebo shit.

Quick response time is obviously good to have in fast-paced action games and such, though I'll definitely use the PC emulator + CRT setup some more to actually determine how much I need one.
Retroarch has some neat features and I haven't run into any runahead-related bugs yet, but I personally prefer standalones as they generally have better UIs and never do the Retropad nonsense.

This diagram and image is from Neo Geo core developer Furrtek and it explains a lot about MiSTer. Of course, even with that, the MiSTer is superior to software emulators (because there are a lot of software emulators which don't care about accuracy, also to a latency the MiSTer is also an absolute winner). I think in the software emulation world only Near built a perfect and an accurate emulator for the SNES, which was also reference for the MiSTer SNES core. An Accurate emulator requires a lot of power and that's why to run bsnes on the Rasperry Pi is near impossible (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/08/accuracy-takes-power-one-mans-3ghz-quest-to-build-a-perfect-snes-emulator/))

>How much worse will the cores that don't require an SDRAM module run if you don't have one installed?

Most cores run on the 32mb ram, a few Neo Geo games need the 128mb and 5th gen will need that much if not more.

I was under the impression that Neo Geo needed that much because the game roms themselves were loaded into the RAM, which is important for loading because obviously those were solid state carts. This is not true for me, I don't have the money to buy the real thing. I did not have enough money to buy the misterfpga either outright, spent money here and there to buy up the parts. It's simply unnecessary. The differences between real hardware and a modern pi4 are negligible to human senses. You can't even detect the differences.

I had one that I tossed against the wall. Ive actually used it for octoprint and then as a mirror using moonlight to broadcast my downstairs computer to the one in my bedroom using nvidia geforce program and that shit could not be trusted for anything, it was constantly crashing. Its not for in depth gaming I can tell you that much. I should not have to fuck with it after continuous use. With the mister its instant and less in the way for things to fuck up, people say its the opposite but its not, mister has a smaller install, just drag and drop after you get ftp enabled and samba file renamed, and then just dump files and load core/game after update_all.

Ask a bitcoin miners how much of a difference it makes when things can be processed in parallel.

But hey if you want to invest some time and tweak bsnes on your 500W gayming pc to get a somehow comparable experience to just push some sprites around then go for it and even then it's not that "muh 100% accuracy". Retro arch's wiki is full of edge cases where the PC architecture hits its limits.

Like I said it depends on the game some are really noticeable, but its bits and pieces and at teh end of the day it all adds up where you have a bag filled with improvements, especially with sound, people talk about latency but sound also was one of the biggest shockers. There's legitimately nothing sadder than an ESL bragging about how he was forced to learn some pointless euro language as a child, and then spent his formative years struggling through media in English. If your native language had any real value to you, you'd be posting on an imageboard in that language, wouldn't you?

Brainlets will always cite shit like "b-but bilinguals are usually smarter/more rich/etc". No shit, because most of them have parents who have emigrated, which means they're probably fucking rich to begin with. Poor people generally aren't bilingual from birth, studies into these kinds of things never properly take into account the factors. Being bilingual doesn't make you smart, smart people are just more likely to be bilingual. It's like bragging about wearing glasses.

Anyway, I know Japanese, which instant makes me superior to you in all regards. Better luck next time, kiddo.

One major issue is audio-video sync. On a pc the sound and graphics hardware are separate devices, but emulation requires the sound and video to be in perfect sync, this is basically impossible to solve perfectly and results in either frame skipping, or some kind of audio rate scaling causing sound quality issues and excessive audio latency. Audio video sync is perfect on FPGA, and the sound has latency.

Most software emulators are horrifically inaccurate. And the accurate emulators require a very fast cpu. This is because to accurately emulate a system, you must advance each emulated component cycle by cycle, but modern cpus are terrible at doing this, an accurate emulator needs to jump between each emulated component tens of millions of times per second, completely destroying the branch prediction and blowing out the L1 cache. A high end PC can just about do this, but your raspberry pie is certainly not capable.

I don't know why this is such a common response. I've already made it pretty obvious that I'm not impressed by the fact you learnt some worthless euro language first because your parents hated you. Do they just get so angry that they can no longer type in English? It's one of those great mysteries of the ESL, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me what kind of point you were trying to make by posting gibberish.
