The last thread archived before I could point out that on page 80 of the previous article, a man with a very tall forehead was claimed to have completed Kickle Cubicle in a straitjacket. Please note this, everyone.

Also concerning the last thread: Did anyone ever play the GI Joe NES game? Was it good? It looks kind of awesome, but maybe it sucks. Nintendo Power says Taxan did the same second quest and third quest (!!!) thing with that game that they did with 8 Eyes. That can be an interesting challenge, anyway, even if the game isn't great.

I played it. It was nice! All the Joes have differing degrees of power (some jump higher, others have more max health or can reach higher weapon levels). You can find health and gun power-ups in all the stages, and they permanently increase your Joes' strength so you'd want to bring in every Joe at least once and scour every stage to to bottom to max their energy and weapon stats. Fortunately every mission lets you bring your choice of 3 Joes who you can swap in as the active player character at will.

I didn't play the sequel back then but I hear while looking somewhat similar to the first, was developed by a whole 'nother dev team so I wonder if any of the gameplay mechanics were maintained.

I heard him speak at a Game Developers Conference maybe ten years ago. The content of his presentation was something businessy that I didn't care about very much, but it was one of the early days of the conference so there weren't many good sessions to choose from yet, and the opportunity to listen to a talk from a guy who'd appeared to me as a comics character in my childhood magazines was enough to draw me in.

Both game were developed by KID, the people that brought you Pepsiman. Capcom published the sequel because Taxan went out of business before the game was done.

Huh, so Taxan was just a publisher. Well that weakens the 8 Eyes connection I thought I'd seen.

Welp, only one new mention that didn't actually make it to the US. Kinda light this time around. But the next two issues have a couple. The issue 30 and 31 storytime won't have any. As the NES's lifespan draws to a close in the US, the number of games announced and not making it drop off.

Over Horizon - Pixel and Hot B
Famicom shoot em up, got ported to Germany but not the greater EU. No fan translation exists, but I'm not sure if one is needed or not. Considered to be one of the best shoot em up games on the Famicom.

"Most Innovative" is just all over the place. Kids had hardly any idea of what was or wasn't innovative in the video game world. I guess that keyboard thing should really have been at the top, but probably not very many people actually played it. I feel like Maniac Mansion is a better choice than Shadowgate, but whatever. I mean they're both ports, so it seems kinda silly to call them out as being especially strong examples of innovation.

This Battletoads origin story is stupid. They're just fictional VR characters who are dumb human boys in reality? Lame. I mean yeah the Dark Queen is apparently real in her own world or whatever, but maybe she isn't??? I mean if she's real then why even call it into question in the first place? It only suggests the whole thing could be stopped if somebody would just turn off the game machine, and then you have to go out of your way to tell the audience that that wouldn't work for some contrived reason. Ninja Turtles did it better: The enemies are ninjas and aliens, the heroes are transformed animals, DONE.

Stupid 90's VR craze. I never understood why media makers kept trying to hook people with the idea that VR is extremely cool and interesting somehow. I kinda got into the conspiracies trend with X-Files and all that, and I liked the flannely angst trend well enough (My So-Called Life, Daria, etc.), but this VR thing was just silly.

Well "precise" might not be the best word, I dunno. Here's what makes it feel relatively uncomfortable for me: You only have two horizontal movement speeds, full-walk and standstill; you can't return to or smoothly approach the standstill speed during a jump but instead must bounce back and forth like Pac-Man; you can't make a small jump; you can't duck-jump or crawl or slide. It's somewhat like Castlevania but Castlevania isn't as frantic as Contra. And also, it doesn't make you jump so high. I'm not a floaty jump person. I don't love Luigi in Mario 2 either. Give me Toad, he is the Mega Man of the team.

Again, I'm not trashing Contra - I love those games. I'm just claiming they're not the best (or even third best) in this particular category.

Oh and the other thing is that Contra, much like Battletoads, likes to portray the depth dimension using diagonal lines, so that you occasionally may doubt the exact position of the edge of a platform. In Mario, Mega Man, and Castlevania, everything is flat and clear. It's not a big problem of course (in Contra - I've certainly had trouble with it in Battletoads) but it's one more factor making the game a little harder to control.
