Petersen didn't make better maps than Romero, he was tasked with making more challenging ones which you equate with "better." Romero's designs have much more purpose and flow better, but since most of his maps are in E1, they're made to be pretty easy.

With that said, both made good maps and are far above American McGee's.

It always baffled me how much ego this guy has compared to his actual achievements within the industry.
The legends tales us that while Romero was dicking around, Carmack dedicated his time an efforts to develop the revolutionary Quake engine. Suddenly Romero comes at Carmack as a complete douche and starts pushing his own vision even though his actual efforts were minimal. Then he leaves ID taking some of its best employees with him only to fuck them over as-well with his inability to plan things ahead. Daikatana was the worst game produced under Ion Storm umbrella, and it rightfully remembered as such.
After bankrupting his own company, Romero went full Casanova, proclaiming himself to be the patriarch of the FPS genre or whatever.
This guy literally did nothing good afterwards, but obsessively masturbating on his legacy like these metal bands that sucked for decades yet still act as if they're living in their glory days. Even Warren Spector (a man who actually got a vision) has an audience with his modern works.
SIGIL is literally a two decade old joke, and I'm glad that most people are finally starting to realize that Romero was nothing but a pretentious hack, for most of his career.
