I wonder how this will work out. Very exciting as an idea, just curious what compatibility will be like. I know in an optimal world, a fpga should replicate the original machine 1:1... but wouldn't you need exact documentation of the original machine's every hardware component to accomplish that?

Im not sure that information exists for the saturn. Am i wrong? Or is there a workaround, like using a computer to examine the components?

No one is trying to replicate the original machine 1:1 or anywhere close to it. It's mostly just expensive emulation so faggots can feel less bad about being emufags. >There could be some legit reasons to use it but 99% of misterfags just use it as an emulator that has little if any benefit over software emulation.
This is probably right, but personally I see it as way better than software emulation.

First, it's hooked up to my CRT. This is a monumental pain in the ass with modern computers, and the whole thing runs essentially silently with basic little fan. Next, it has full zero latency* controller support through SNAC. And that also covers light guns, all my old guns work exactly the same way they do on my original hardware.

In terms of accuracy, it's close enough that I can't tell a difference in side-by-side comparisons. It puts out a perfect RGB signal, unlike a lot of older systems, and it boots up in seconds with game loading being nigh-instantaneous, which is far faster than any flashcart on the market.

If you're hooking it up to a modern LCD screen, I really don't see much point over runahead. But if you want the closest thing to the real thing without spending hundreds of bucks on flashcarts and RGB mods? It's a serious contender.

>> No.8051678

>>8051418
Software emulators are far more mature and have millions of people testing them. The accuracy meme is almost entirely based on the idea that the FPGA is emulating the hardware cycle accurately. That's not necessarily the true but it's generally very close. The thing is that as soon as your USB controller into your mister and your mister into your LCD that becomes largely irrelevant. While started with good intentions, currently main purpose of mister is to allow emufags to spend money and thus feel less like losers than they did when they were doing it for free.

>>8051446
What software emulator do you use that's not open source? Mister is based on mist which is about 10 years old. The only thing young is you.

>>8051572
This is what the developers originally intended if they were still concentrating on that it'd be great. Instead they decided to cater to emufags and it went to shit. When they started sacrificing accuracy for being child-friendly it just because another emulator. This pissed of many people including one of the few people who actually knew wtf he was doing.
Not to nit pick, but hooking up a modern computer to a CRT isn't difficult if you know what you're doing. Ironically, I've done it many times but would never considering emulating and playing that way.

There was something I heard a while back about a team decapping the PS1's ICs, allowing for replicating the exact circuit much like what was done for the NES. I don't know if that ever happened though. But if it did then I don't see why a software emulator would even need to enter the equation except for maybe a point of comparison.

Any chance of the MiSTer ever getting N64 support?

I'm interested in replaying some of my childhood favourites for the first time in, fuck, like 20 years and while the price for a flashcart is reasonable (was looking at an x7 on stone age gamer) given what n64 titles cost on the aftermarket these days, it crossed my mind as I was shopping online for a phone for my mother that the Redmi 9 I eventually settled on cost exactly the same as the Everdrive, and I was kinda struck by the absurdity of the situation. Not that there's anything wrong with a high quality niche device attracting a premium relative to a cheap mass produced chinkphone but my brain is retarded and irrational.
But anyway, I have a MiSTer already and it'd be nice to get a N64 core.

If I use a third party controller or AV cables is it no longer real hardware?
If I install a modchip or use an action replay etc. to run region free games is it no longer real hardware? What if I'm playing backups?
If the capacitors are leaking/failing and I recap the board is it no longer real hardware?
If I install an RGB mod or a better RGB chip/amp, is it no longer real hardware?
