It’s great, not worse than 2 and 3. But you need to know that Fatal Frame games don’t have much plot, they sort of have a lore that you learn through documents and recordings. Like in Resident Evil but way deeper

Fatal Frame 1 is the only good one, they made the sequels way too easy.

I still think REmake is the pinnacle of survival horror but damn Fatal Frame 2 is an excellent game and one of the most atmospheric games ever.

They all happen in the same fictional universe, and there are some references from the older games in the newer ones, but nothing essential, just for "hey, I get that" moments.

Play them in any order you like or skip the ones you don't feel interested in. Each story is self-contained and you'll have no trouble following them.

First game is boring. Second is where shit hits the fan.

I only played the first and really liked it (though some of the combat dragged by the end). I will admit that I cheesed the blind woman fight though... First game has a pretty gruesome and grim story. Funnily enough the extremely stiff voice acting added to the charm since why would ghosts talk like normal human beings anyhow?
