My only problems with it are win10 magically undoing settings and breaking things, so I'm going to run it off an rpi4 I can transfer games to over wifi and never have to deal with any shit again. SMB is only getting better and so far I've seen no games that don't work as well as a hard drive does.

This is the tutorial I used: https://www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6236

On a semi-related note, what the fuck is going on with ps2-home's website? It's slower than shit as of late.

>> No.7778937

>>7778921
Yeah I was very surprised how well SMB works, compared to what are now regarded as streaming services.
That Win10 magically doing things scares me, I don't want to go through setting up all over again. However I'm pretty sure it's because of the fucking automatic updates which mess things up.

Also there's some thing in Win10 where if you don't use SMB for certain period of time, it automatically disables it.

>> No.7778950

>>7778937
>I don't want to go through setting up all over again
All it did to me was disable SMB in the windows services and features menu. It was a weird frustration because I was checking everything back and forth, no information or permissions changed - then I basically redid the SMB setup from 0 and saw that in the features menu (a rarely accessed menu mind you) had it unchecked - and I knew I activated it in the past. Apparently an update fucked with it. That's why I'm going the pi route, a once and for all solution I never have to touch again except to transfer files to.

Regardless when the win10 setup worked, it worked great. Occasionally the network side of things wouldn't properly initialize on the PS2 and require a reboot or two, but when I was running win7 this didn't happen so I assume that was also win10.

I see. Sounds like a good option for me too, but I have zero experience with rasperry pis. But if everything automagically fucks up then I will try the linux route, fuck windows 10.

I used this tutorial instead:

I tried to ask advice on ps2-home but they didn't allow my first post because the tutorial is not from the ps2-home. It took me 6 hours of figuring out all by myself but it was worth it. Based keeping the forum's quality, I guess.

Once you have FreeMCBoot you can use that to run mechapwn, which does make import PS2 games work (albeit with a few hoops).
But mechapwn doesn't work on all consoles, sadly.

If you just want to pirate, and don't care about legitimate imports, they work on all consoles regardless. So it's funnily easier to pirate than to buy real imports.

The PS2’s component signal really isn’t very good and I doubt your modern 4K display has a component input anyway. A lot of them don’t now.
Composite on a screen like that will be ghastly. Not worth your time period.
Your options are shitty PS2 to HDMI boxes that will leave you wanting more, expensive external scaling solutions (make sure they can actually output a 1080p upscaled signal at least because input lag gets worse and worse at lower resolutions on any modern display, but it’s really noticeable with 4K displays - another good reason to not directly connect your PS2 to that kind of display without some sort of external scaler), or you could just connect it via composite to a good old consumer CRT the way Sony and God intended. It will look perfectly fine and you’ll have nothing to worry about with that method. In fact it will probably look better than you remember it being, if you haven’t seen a PS2 displayed on one in a while. Most games run in 480i and CRTs are really forgiving on the image. I hope you find yours.

i got a ps2 recently too, although not as lucrative of a pick up. at least it's the SCPH-50000 model so it'll stay quiet for the most part. what's the most popular options for homebrewing on a SATA and FreeHDBoot? My DVD player is 3.02U and the github page for FreeDVDBoot says it's not gonna work. there's a lot of information that's hard to sort out regarding hard drives, like IDE-to-SATA 3rd party adapters, modkits for original adapters, SD card adapters, simply getting an IDE drive instead, all of it is a bit mind-numbing. My end-game is a 250-500GB drive for games and to have FMCB on the hard drive itself.

run mechapwn and convert your console to DEX. use discpatcher 3.0 to patch your iso to master disc. burn it. fmcb fastboot should run it. if it doesn't work, try ulaunchelf ps2disc option.
option 2)
use freedvdboot disc patcher with your iso. pop it straight into any ps2 slim and it should work. ps2 fats running correctly configured fmcb should automatically pick it up and run it with esr. only works for dvds, compatibility issues may ensue.

The mechapwn method is rather new and reports about how it works are conflicting. Some people say it just boots from the main menu as long as you are using FreeMCBoot with the fastboot option enabled. Others say you have to do it through ulaunchelf instead. It may have something to do with the console model. If nothing else, the ulaunchelf way always works.
The older way is to use ESR. This way has lower compatibility with games. If you patch a game with the FreeDVDBoot+ESR Autopatcher, it will self-boot on a PS2 slim even without needing FMCB.

Yes, it creates self-booting burned discs similar to what you have on the Dreamcast. Since it relies upon FreeDVDBoot, they only self-boot on slim consoles. However, they are still valid ESR discs that can be run using ESR on fat consoles. So there is no downside to using the auto patcher.

So what is the best way to hook up PS2 to your TV? RBG or SCART?

>> No.7791054

>>7791045
SCART is usually RGB. And that depends on your TV.

My old CRT TV supports both. They are the same, yes?

>> No.7791079

>>7791062
I assume you mean your TV has YPbPr component, not RGB?
They're the same but component may support higher resolution on newer displays and SCART cables often haven noise. So go with the component cables.

> YPbPr
That's it!

SCART is the form factor, it may support RGB or not. It's easy to see with this symbol.

I have a PS2 slim I bought pre-modded with a dying disc reader, what's the most painless way to get FreeMcboot on it with the least external tools possible? I do have a spare HDD but no way to access it from my computer so that's out of the way.

>> No.7797717

>>7797703
burn a freedvdboot disc and use it to run the fmcb installer from a usb drive.

sounds like your drive is dying. burned dvds are harder to read.

Like i get this when trying to boot it

Retail games run fine, dual layers too
Single layer burns take a lil while to get recgonized but do run
Only dual layer burn i did gave me this

Is it my laser dying or did i do the burn wrong?

SMB is worth it. Playing Berserk with sub mod is worth it. Most rewarding tech experience so far has been replacing thermal paste on ps3
