Ninja Gaiden 1 is the only honest to god GOOD ninja game I've found. It's a surprisingly lackluster genre. Shinobi you'd think would excel at it but your ninja just plods along and feels slower than SMB1 and stuff like Ninja Warriors is more mecha and brawler. There's Tenchu but you don't do real cool ninja shit in it, you're forced to play it slow and stealthy instead of flipping around killing shit with ninja magic so while it's still alright it's not a good ninja game.

That's what people want when they say they want ninjas. No one wants to play as historically accurate ninjas which were basically just peasants with farming tools. They want dudes flying around on kites raining fire and lighting on enemies and teleporting behind them because it's nothing personal.

The Last Ninja and its second sequel on the C64. Boss game. Hard AF, although shitty controls are mostly to blame.

I never see anyone talk about it, but Ninja Crusaders is pretty great. Different weapons allow you to morph into animals, which have their own separate attacks and abilities. Plus it had simultaneous co-op.
