It depends on how it's modded. I disagree with case modding. I'm fine if it's modchipping, softmodding as games are often fucking expensive, especially PS1 games, just as long as it's reversible.

i put the backlight kits in all my dmg gameboys about 7 years ago. Got me back into gameboy games, played all the time for years. Havent touched my dmg for way too long, guess the charm wore off. Now I see the awesome new led screens you can get, might try that out this winter when I have some time. Very cool to see the use of the color palettes on the dmg.

Each pixel seems to be more precisely bordered and evenly colored than on the original display, making sprites and backgrounds look more jagged and emulator-like. I remember the original display being a bit fuzzier. Or maybe it's just because the photo is so close up and sharp and the original display is similarly sharp and you just don't notice it from a normal viewing distance without magnification.

I think this one only has a backlight mod with the original LCD, and you can clearly see how much fuzzier and blended the pixels are, and that's how I remember the image quality.

>> No.7716430

>>7716387
I switched on my unmodified gbc to check this and no, its just the screen being brighter and the camera being so close to it that makes it look that way

Holding it at playing distance the individual pixels aren't as discernable, but bringing the screen closer and closer to my face in good light the individual squares in the dot matrix display are quite easy to make out if you concentrate on them, getting my eye as close to the screen as it is in that image it becomes quite difficult to focus on the unlit image because of how close it is and the reflections in the lens above it being much brighter and easier to see than it is.

I think its quite easy to forget how absurdly small the GB and GBC screens are, at comfortable playing distance its a tiny box you're looking at, which is what makes the image smooth out as it does

Not a fan for GBC. The GBC stock reflective screen actually looks great in sunlight or with enough indoor lighting (lamp) IMO. You also get faithful colors and a real pixel grid. These LCDs oversaturate the hell out of games.

Modernized worm lights with stronger, more diffused lightning would have been nice.

Guess I'm the opposition here
I do not give two ducks what you do to your console. Fucking smash it to bits if you want idc. I'm certainly not going to complain if you drill a hole in the back for an extra video port, or snap the tabs on a super Nintendo. For most of these systems, there are literally millions of them out there. And chances are, if you care enough to do some sort of mod to it, you probably aren't going to put it back into the secondhand market anyway.

There is no situation where I'll end up with your mangled console, and we aren't going to run out of unmodified gameboy advances anytime soon.

On that note, why care at all if your snes tabs are snipped? That doesn't even effect how the thing looks, it's all internal. And it's only a good change in performance.

Are you trying to preserve your console as a museum quality reference artifact?? Because sorry to say but your dingy yellowed snes is not ever going to serve that purpose.

But in the same way that I don't care what you do to your toys, I also don't care what you don't do to your toys, so do whatever makes you happy

This. Why would I want a faggot backlit screen when I already have a wormlight aka my cock

>> No.7717503

It depends, I understand the purist perspective of not defiling a vintage system, but there are cases for modding damaged systems.

I've got an old launch model GBA which a broken screen and a missing battery cover, but everything else about it still works. It'd be a solid candidate for screen and case replacement with rechargeable battery pack mod.

For young people, YouTube has replaced TV & magazines as the primary source for dissemination of hobby ideas. I guarantee that you have wanted a video game or some type of clothes after seeing a commercial for it as a kid. No, the real issues are the fucked image retention and odd refresh rate inconsistencies. Probably has something to do with the odd refresh rate GBA games run at not playing nice with the panel

Screen replacement mods and backlights and such for old portable consoles are generally amazing. I need to pick up a newer one for a cheap ass DMG I bought a while back to get it usable, the screen was destroyed when I bought it.
I'm also loving the push for ODEs and very tempted to get a GC Loader since the laser on my Gamecube is dying along with the fact that I can use it to boot straight into the Melee hacks that are out and make my life easier for practicing tech there. Figure if I do it I might as well buy the Noctua fan and brace for it and replace that as well just to make sure everything stays good for another 20+ years.

I just finished reshelling my childhood gba sp + a new battery. It was the red one prior. Sorta just winged it with the colors, wish I gave it more thought, but I also don’t hate the daily dose coloration. Haven’t tested it with a game (none on me atm), only possible issue is that the shoulder buttons feel a bit meh (they did in the last shell too).
Just wanted to experiment/try something new for once. was a nice little $30 project, only soured by a stripped screw on the old case making the removal hell.
I was thinking of cricuting a sticker/decal, but can’t think of much I’d be happy with for these colors (in green or white presumably)
