Regardless, I own a Neo Geo CD and cab say with 100% certainty it's possibly the most based of the consoles I own right up there with my model 1 genesis/model 2 CD/32X setup, my NES Toploader, and my Grape Purple N64.

It's an arcade machine the you could play at home, and all the games show that clearly in their design and gameplay. This isn't so great when you have limited lives and continues and the games are designed exclusively to strip you of all disposable income.

It's the luxury sports car of 16-bit cartridge consoles, pound-for-pound most powerful of it's kind by a long-shot. But it's also a niche product and SNK intended, designed and marketed as such.
I have two now and used to rent it in the early-90s as a kid blown away by it's detailed games and sheer massiveness in everything in it's presentation, but I still did and do rate the SNES above for it's variety of games meant to take you on an adventure instead of just taking your cash.

No, not initially because they knew it was to expensive and that the game cartridges where to expensive as well, it would sell poorly and profit margins would be close to zero , hence it was meant as a luxury rental option for high-end hotels ONLY.
Then Japan's economy went to hell and there was no market for these luxury items domestically to justify a price that would be profitable so they had to try to get them sold to anyone willing to pay.

These adds you see trying to market them as "home-consoles" are from various importers (some very shady) that got limited batches as again SNK never had the logistics, support or intent needed to sell and market these as home-consoles and as such they failed, as SNK first predicted, the system and games where to expensive and not profitable if they wanted them to sell. After a few attempts to make some cheaper hardware revisions it was discontinued.

This is well documented and widely know, it's a consolized arcade machine never intended or designed for mass market appeal, playing badly thought out and balanced for home the market, quarter muncher arcade games.

90% of Neo Geo games contain the exact same content on AES and MVS carts. So your BIOS decides which version (home or arcade) will boot. However a small number of later carts differ. If i recall right KOF2003 and a few other 2000+ releases differ between AES and MVS.

Okay, so finally going back and reading through the reply chain of this ridiculous autism festival, I have a couple of points I'd like to make.

First, the Neo Geo "AES" system was/is called the AES because, as I mentioned, SNK bothered to stamp "Advanced Entertainment System" right there on the front of the fucking console. This isn't debatable. (Whatever Dion had to do with using/popularizing the term is beside the point as it was in use since, quite literally, day one.)

The Neo Geo "AES" started its life as a rental unit. This is a fact supported by pretty much every source that discusses the system or the company, and is validated by both the fact that former SNK employees verify this in interviews and that a number of "NGH" manuals (particularly the earlier titles) state that the cart is "for use with the Neo Geo Rental System only" quite clearly in the back. This is also not debatable.

Now, most sources explain that the "Rental System" was targeted almost exclusively toward hotels, which makes sense given the fact that direct rentals of video games to consumers has been illegal since 1984 owing to a major revision in the Japanese Copyright Act meant to curb piracy. (As an aside, this law remains in effect to this day. Japan, you so crazy.)

So the question I'm left with is whether or not "NGH" actually meant "Neo Geo Home" when it seems to be far more likely that it meant "Neo Geo Hotel" as they were the chief (and only) consumers of the system at its launch. The system didn't begin with any intentions of ever being a "home" console (as SNK believed both the hardware and software to be completely cost prohibitive for an outright purchase) and it couldn't be rented directly to consumers due to the law. With these facts in mind, why would they have ever referred to it as "Home" anything?

For me, it's gotta be Money Puzzle Exchanger, Windjammers, and Zed Blade.

the CD/CDZ budget version of the Neo Geo is quite nice if somewhat limited, recommended if you want more than emulation but the MVS/AES routes seem too messy/costly

introduces load times, can be quite long on the first two versions of the CD system but the CDZ cuts them down by 40-50% or so.

only received 2/3 of the library

perks:

cheaper entry point for hardware/games as not only are the actual games cheaper it can play burned discs.

clean video output options including clean RGB unmodified. almost as clean as a properly setup MVS can do.

has a couple exclusive releases like Crossed Swords II, and a Samurai Shodown RPG that never got translated as far as i know.

changed music, sound effects, and additional game modes on select titles but not all of these changes are considered upgrades to some.
