/CRT/ general: Lethal Weapon edition
previous thread >>7400427

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

How do you even find CRTs without shipping them cross country? I've looked on every local ad and sale bracket and craigslist for my area within 100 miles and I can't find a single decent CRT that's in the 19-30 inch range unless it's extremely old with nothing but RF connectors. Any good recommendations for finding these without going to ebay?

Anyone tried modding a CRT with digital potentiometers?
So that instead of having to manually adjust a knob for things like horizontal and vertical size for different system you could just load up a profile with an arduino or something

Question for you NTSC CRT fags:

I don't know if this is a thing already because i have no interest in using a CRT, but why not use a PAL CRT TV that does 60hz? Most of them did 60hz by the late 90's here in the UK. I'd often play my Dreamcast at 60hz back then. PAL has a higher resolution, more scan lines. Whenever i see pics/vids of NTSC CRT's they always look like shit, more blurry and the horizontal scan lines are definitely more visible. I often see people after high quality CRT's with good image quality, so why not just go for 60hz PAL?

Dunno about Sony or Panasonic but I can say with absolute confidence that you're completely wrong about Toshiba.
Reason I know this is because I've owned a lot of re-badged Toshiba TVs over the years and not a single fucking one has supported NTSC signals over composite.
Fun fact: throughout the 70's and 80's Toshiba was one of the largest consumer electronic OEMs. And they did all sorts of price points from very very cheap to the highest-end stuff money could buy.

I'll try to snap a pic later but my Magnavox has what looks like a pinkish cloud in the upper right-hand side of the screen that tints everything in the radius. I've already to the best of my ability removed anything causing magnetic interference, degaussed several times (the manual claims you can force it by holding the power button) and even tried a degaussing wand but it's still there. Is this symptomatic of something unrelated to magnets?

>> No.7455471

That's caused by the Earth's magnetic field. Try rotating the CRT to face a different direction. I keep mine facing north. If you have a good set, you should be able to adjust a setting in the service manual called "Landing". This will correct the discolored corner.

Probably because you guys use 240 volts. We usually only have 240 in our kitchen and maybe garage.

What would the power frequency do too?
Your power is 50 hz as well as your video.

Our 240v is still 60 hz.

Anyways giving an example of my US marketed Compaq VGA CRT, it won't do PAL interlaced, however I can do progressive. I think it does 720x576p.

Like yesterday I was playing some PAL videos from files on the computer.

Files that were 25 or 50 fps.

50hz flickers too much for me, so I can do 100hz, I think up to around 800x600 resolution. Looks smooth.

There is no such thing as mass produced 240p TVs or monitors.

Old consoles were made with NTSC and PAL interlaced output in mind.

240 was just a cost and technical limitation for hardware and software.

They were not meant to output a 240p modulated image.

VGA was standardised at 640x480 minimum interlaced or progressive.

There's been some oddball off standard VGA modes that might do lower resolution, but that may be trial and error between cards and monitors.

I'm planning to use my 29" SD Sony Wega CRT TV (it has s-video and component inputs, plus a subwoofer on top) as a second PC monitor via an adapter.
I bought a cheapo HDMI to Component/YPbPr (pic related), and it doesn't work on the CRT or even on modern TV with PC and consoles (PS4, PS3). It does work with the streaming box of a local TV cable service, but only on modern HD TVs.
Looking at some videos, the Musou HDMI to Component converter seems to work, even on SD CRT TVs, but also the H2CS Universal converter. I read that the latter has some problems with drifting image, and the former with the sound (it lowers the sound volume).
Which one you guys recommend or should I go for a HDMI to S-video converter (really, there's not much difference between component and s-video on an SD CRT TV, both are much better than composite)?

Some obscure security monitor, but the tubes inside are the same as the ones in the pro JVC monitors. The set is a 15 inch screen with 800 lines, which is higher than the majority of SONY PVMs.
It only has 1 BNC input and 1 S Video input, which is fine. S Video cables are what I ordered.

I owned a second hand Philips Cineos: 32", widescreen, CRT HDTV with HDMI input.
On HDMI, it had noticeable input lag (sometimes as bad as crappy LCD and LED TVs) and since it had 100hz digital processing, it forced the frames, which is not good, specially for shooters and fighting games. On component video it was much better. The TV sadly, crapped out on me, that particular model is prone to several malfunctions and overall not a long service life. The Sony FD Trinitron Wega XBR CRT HDTVs never came to my country, but I guess that they are much better (and also more expensive) than anything that Philips shat out. Kinda like its name suggest, it it's pretty good for watching cable TV, movies, series, both in 16:9 and 4:3 (if you don't mind the vertical black bars), but not good for games. Also, since it had HDMI, you could use modern streaming boxes without adapters, provide the HDMI out won't belly up, or the upscaler can also malfunction, rendering both the HDMI and the component inputs useless or only take the sound signal.
Then again, probably Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, are much better, but since most of them are 100hz, they aren't the best for gaming.

its definitely doable but I wouldn't really recommend it, not long term at least
I'm gonna assume its 1600×1200 at 60 or 75hz, lower refresh rates are fine for games, but I find them unbearable for desktop use, its definitely going to strain the fuck out of your eyes, specially if you spend many hours in front of the screen, you could drop the resolution and increase the refresh rate, but that also comes with drawbacks, not to mention modern websites and programs aren't that great in 4:3 to begin with

Yeah and it's decent. Little hard to get your hands on due to the weird way it was distributed. Despite what some may say, it was available for purchase through Blockbuster's website while also being a rental exclusive to the store. Has some tweaks made to the gameplay compared to the PC version where it controls a lot more like OoT rather than the PC version having a more Tomb Raider play style. An impressive effort for the console and a decent port (I've seen some say the N64 version is much better in comparison to the PC version, although it's usually in reference to control differences so I can't tell you personally if the PC version is better or worse since the N64 version is the only one I'm familiar with). It is a little buggy at times with some strange graphical distortions at rare instances, but it's an overall pretty fun game. Expect a $50-$70~ price range loose and an even higher price in boxed ofc. I here emulating it is just as good but I don't emulate N64 games all that often since I usually have most of the games I want physically, so if you really want real hardware but don't want to drop that much cash, then best bet is to play on an Everdrive. Fun gameplay and exploration and the presentation is better than I'd have suspected.

Just curious, how do you guys game on your CRTs?

I've been using a softmodded Wii so far, but the poor N64 and PS1 support has been a bummer, and I'm thinking of trying to do some sort of raspberry pi thing.

I also tried connecting it to my PC via a cheap HDMI to S-Video converter but the results weren't great since windows refused to output anything less than 800x600 to it, and using custom resolutions through the Nvidia control panel didn't seem to work.

I need your help /CRT/.

Friend of mine has a 29" trinitron that he's had for a little while. Just moved house the other day and on trying to turn the set on a small pop sound was made and but no signs of life otherwise. Tried to replace the fuse in the plug (UK) but that wasn't it. It didn't/doesn't smell of burning. however there is some pretty bad looking dust inside the case. Prior to the move it looked great, excellent brightness/geometry and no odd behaviour at all.

Is it possible the move has knocked something out of place? What could the quiet pop noise be? Going to open it up soon to try dusting but in the meantime I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what might have caused this. Thanks in advance.

My fellow brothers and sisters blessed by the phosphorous glow behind the shadow-mask, have any of you tested the input lag of those built in 100hz/120hz modes that came with TVs in the late 90s-to-early-00s with something like a "Time Sleuth"?

My faggot ass has gone and went used to the persistent image of (actual real) high-hertz panel displays and the flickering of CRTs is kinda driving me nuts after a while. The Panasonic TV I have has a 100hz (PAL) mode which helps with removing the flickering, but I'm starting to imagine games play a little bit more sloppy with it on.

I just want to bask in the glorious radiance of the phosphor without getting a headache or extra lag.

It's all possible today but emulator faggots are just too fucking lazy and always go for half-assed "heh no one can tell the difference anyway, it's good enough bro" and leave things looking, sounding and playing like shit as always. Hence, here we are still having to source and play on CRTs.

No 4k is the absolute minimum, there are gradients to the R/G/B pixels them self and they never appear uniform in symmetry, color or brightness and then you have to keep in mind the phosphor glow and bloom decay creating even more movement. Actually, BOTH of you retards are just arguing semantics. Probably over the term "progressive scan" because its mostly used to refer to 480p. While 240p is technically progressive, it wasn't originally intended by tv standards and so was barely even acknowledged until retroactively.

Depend on the display. Some display would correctly understand the signal as 240p and would try their best to upscale it to 1024x768p (if we are talking about fixed resolution displays). Others would mistake the signal for 480i, what would cause interlacing effects and image distortion if no desinterlacing solution was applied.

I've been having a grand time testing all my consoles on it. For the longest time I've been playing old consoles through RGB SCART on a Framemeister, and while I was always pleased with how it looked and felt, playing games on a proper CRT just feels better.
5th gen consoles are especially nice on it. Playing my RGB modded N64 always looked a bit off on my modern TV, and it looks so much better on the PVM.

My Dell 772C works great at 640x480 and 800x600 progressive, but the geometry goes NUTS at 1024x768. I shut it off right away and I need to sleep otherwise I'd get a picture, but it the image is curved at the sides really bad. The monitor should support that resolution, and it didn't bitch at me telling me it was out of sync (which it's done before)

I also noticed a small white blinking light at the bottom right of the screen. I know TVs can have weird shit in the overscan, but I've never seen that.

According to this image, it's barrel distortion (but at least 50% worse). Is there any reason this would effect only higher resolutions? IIRC, this monitor should go up to 1280x1024 but I'm not trying that shit now. I've had a much older Packard Bell stop popping in back when I was using it when it was clearly fucked and I'm not doing that again.

If the TV doesn't have an input button, and if changing channels below channel 1 or 2 doesn't work, then you'll need a remote control.

Universal ones are cheap, but compatibility is sketchy with new remotes on old tvs.
You can search the TV's model number (you should know this anyway to find the manual, to answer questions like this), and search that on ebay to find a remote.
There's more expensive remotes by Logitech that are 99% guaranteed to work.
And lastly, if your phone has an IR blaster you can use that to control it through an app (apparently, never tried this).
