Let's be honest, the camera angle is the king in TPS. OG Mafia and Max Payne are the prime examples of how things should be done in order to make shooting and navigating as satisfying as possible.

The series started dying with Code Veronica and was truly killed by fucking Zero.
The fact of the matter is the survival horror RE games were becoming shitty, getting mediocre review scores, and selling badly. The formula was fucking stale, the market was flooded with clones that were surpassing it in quality, RE4 was -exactly- what the series needed.

Beyond that, almost directly after RE4 Capcom had a mass exodus of literally all their best talent aside from Itsuno who was busy with Devil May Cry. They pissed off Mikami, the genius director who made RE4 possible in the first place, by badly porting the game to PS2, and lost Kamiya and Inaba as well when they shut down Clover. With nobody talented left to actually make the games, of course the further Resident Evils were going to be shitty. It's hardly RE4's fault.

Code Veronica and RE0 are good games and Capcom continued to make good RE games after Mikami and his pals left

This game blew my fucking mind away when it came out. My friends would bother me all the time to come over and play it. It was the ultimate sharp left turn for a franchise. RE4 was the unique answer to games as a whole becoming faster and twitchier in 3D spaces.

RE4 is the ONLY over-the-shoulder RE that did it well. It was a lightning-in-a-bottle scenario that will never happen again, so they are going to re-release it and remake it until the end of time

This came out around the same time as MGS3. I told one of my friends in high school that I was enjoying RE4 more than MGS3. He looked me dead in the eye and said:

I don't think it was horrible but it definitely wasnt what everyone hyped it up to be. Babysitting has been and always will be a shitty gameplay mechanic, I just wanted Ashley to die 10 minutes after I met her. Also the suit case organizing was stupid as shit. Other than that it was decent.

I got it when it came out, and I didn't think it was bad but I just kinda got bored of it by the end of the castle area and dropped it.
I remember it lasting longer than any RE I played before and the gameplay wasn't that interesting to warrant the length imo.
The only thing I regret missing were the regenerators
