Would it have saved the Saturn?

No. Because its one game and unless said game ends in uper Mario 64 that wasn't gonna cut it in the 5th gen. Especially in Sega's case.

>> No.7438014

Draw distance is still shit. That was just as much of an issue as the shit frame rate.

Sega needed something like the much improved Daytona CCE engine, but instead used it to actually make a real Daytona port, and not the bastardised "Daytona" CCE that looked, sounded and handled nothing like Daytona. Because none of those things were due to the engine, they were all because of retarded decisions at Sega.

It would have just felt slower

No. Nothing would save the Saturn. There was way too much infighting at Sega during the time for it to happen I'm sorry but this is the harsh reality we all must accept.

I have never played a Sega Saturn and none of the gameplay I see from it makes me want to. Sucks to say as a Sega fan but it's true. The Saturn and its library were so inferior to PlayStation

I never had a problem with the port's framerate. The pop-in was shit though.

why save something that has no future

>> No.7438893

They should have just used the actual arcade hardware for the Saturn (not some cutdown Frankenstein pos.)
System was already expensive and losing them money, may as well have gone for the gold.

literally nothing could have saved the Saturn. It was mismanaged, badly targeted at a dead market, poorly made, and had no fucking games.

There are tons of games just because you don’t like any of them doesn’t erase them from reality.

How they could have saved the Saturn:

> $299
Launching at the same price as the PS1 would allow them to really hammer in how the Saturn was a better value compared to the PS1, since you were getting a pack in game, which saved you $50, and you didn't have to buy a memory card like you did with the Playstation, which saved you $25.

> Not hire Bernie Stolar
Not having the guy who ran the Atari Lynx department would have meant that more 2D games would have been released in the west, which would have bolstered the system's catalog. The Saturn would have had a mix of 3D games and arcade ports to flex its muscle, as well as 2D RPGs and adventure games that would have been alluring to gamers looking for something a bit deeper.

> Release a fucking Sonic game
A solid 3D or even 2.5D Sonic game for the system would have been a huge benefit, instead SoA and SoJ wasted time with retarded fisheye techdemos and silo culture/corporate infighting that went nowhere

> Push the Netlink harder
Releasing more Netlink compatible games, as well as working with ISPs to subsidize the cost of the hardware in exchange for customers signing up for 1 or 2 year contracts would have done a lot of good. The internet was exploding in the mid 90s, and their only major competitor for the non-computer internet access space would have been WebTV.

> Not launch four fucking months early
The surprise launch was insane, but it made a lot of retailers butthurt (especially KB Toys, who were huge in the 90s), and it meant that devs had to scramble to get their launch titles ready on time. Sega had a lot of balls doing this, but it just didn't work out the way they had hoped.

Honestly, I think doing just one of these things would have helped a ton, but doing all of them would have kept the Saturn alive much longer, meaning they would not have had to rush the launch of the Dreamcast, meaning it would have been much more competitive specs-wise with the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube.
