Grim Fandango is absolutely possible without a guide. But there were several point & click games in 90s and early 00s which had puzzles that you could only solve by checking random combinations of items, clicking random shit because there was no sense to them at all and game gave you absolutely no clues. These were the worst.

I Will never find the cat race puzzle solution by myself.

>> No.7312926

i beat it without a guide like a decade ago, though i did get stuck for few days on the cat race puzzle.

>> No.7312983

I suffer from refuse to use a guide unless I've been stuck for days and then when I use it once I think fuck it and use it too much. there was a tip website I found that gave you hints rather than the answer tho I think i used that

I propose an official genre name change to Filter 'em ups

Yeah that's the only real complaint about the game since you can miss a conversation with a character in a room that you don't even know exists, and it's one of the most elaborate puzzles in the game.

I bet the game when I was young like 10 or 11, took me like 6 months.
Back then this kind of games had a whole different peace, it could even take years for you to finish them
I remember playing it with my father and friends, trying something new each time or replaying old save states just because a scene was funny.

I literally beat it as a 12 year old
The only place I needed a guide is that awfully fucking retarded cat track race ticket stub puzzle

It's not bad game design anon you're just shit at it

The only obtuse part is the cat race puzzle. Outside of that the game gives you a lot of clues and you can figure stuff out mostly through experimentation.

Most point and clicks are. They were a shitty genre and I'm glad they're basically dead and relegated to micro budget indie shit or the occasional kickstarter.
They might honestly be the single worst genre of video game, assuming you don't count non-game shit like visual novels and idle/clicker games.

i used to love the humor in these old adventure games and thought they were charming and witty, but now i am older and can't fucking stand them, neither monty python, they are just grating and come off as tryhard for some reason.

That's the one puzzle I always get annoyed by when replaying it.
Well that and the movement/timing-based ones like the elevator truck one.

This. Either they give up completely or ruin the game abusing a guide and wonder why they didn't have fun.

Everyone's complaining about the cat race, but the only puzzle I had to look up was that one where you were supposed to entangle the ship with the anchor chain

I've said it before, I wish there were walkthroughs that only had solutions to the illogical nonsensical puzzles. Difficult time-consuming puzzles are fine as long as they make sense, but there's no way of knowing if they do before you've either solved them or used a guide.

Riven is hard but it's never nonsensical.

That one's pretty bad too.
Not because of the goal but because of how the whole conveyor belt stuff works and the short cutscene + area with funky climbing movement underwater that's connected to it.

I think that's the only really bad puzzle in the game
