I never understood why people wrote their names on games. It's not like it prevented theft in any way.

I still have a game that belonged to a kid who lived around the corner from me. He moved away in the summer of 2001 (I remember this because 9/11 happened literally three weeks later). I think it has a lot to do with siblings, when you're raised with brothers and sisters and forced to share with them throughout your entire adolescence there are some things you want to carve your name in to denote that it is indeed, yours and not theirs.

It is a common phenomenon with books and records, you'll find old second hand novels with someone's name written in it, and I've come across old records with a name written somewhere on the gatefold or inside the cardboard slip (someone mentioned this already in the thread and yes it is common if you collect records to come across this).

Similar story happened with my desktop computer. My dad gave me and my brother a computer when we were kids, in like 1997 or 8 maybe, and my mom ran out of money and pawned the computer. We never did shit it back and I'm still bitter about it to this day. A couple years later my dad gave us a new computer and we spray painted it red just so my mom wouldn't pawn that.
