I think Doom has much more mileage, but Rise Of The Triad is a supreme game that does the most that it can with its comparatively simple technology, which is impressive, and the resulting game is quite fun. There are few like it.

One wonders what the game would have been like if they had actually opted to switch to Build like they considered, and released it a little bit after Doom 2? The game may still have been crazy and fun, but it could also have been different, and may have drawn more attention. Still, the game we got is very satisfying.

Updated the Action-Horror scale, added in Quake, since that was a pretty important missing piece.

Also moved the position of some games around to be more consistent.

The ratings for these games take into account things like atmosphere, music, theme, scripted events, ai, mood, gameplay etc - i.e Manhunt has atmosphere, gore, music going for it, and survival horror elements, the latter part of the game is simply too action-orientated, and the early game has Starkweather as a nuisance as a source of safety - in essence it's a lot like Doom in it's A-H horror scale, but more towards horror.

I wonder if using the Build Engine would have allowed the variant enemy system they did? They did a variant version of each enemy, a few of which were female versions, with different digitized actor sprites and sounds, etc. All the assets were finishedand the game was supposed to randomly choose which version of each enemy to spawn in - however in the end it made memory requirements way too high (barely playable with 8mb and unplayable with 4mb) so it was scrapped. Pic related is the female version of the Low Guard.

Anime Lara Croft from 1.0 version of Shadow Warrior for GDX and Redux.

Small sprite replacement I did because I liked 1.0 version of Lara more.
You'll need to use SLADE to import this older map (should take just a moment), or just use it with a newer map and live with Lara being hanged by her neck. Not a big deal.
Since I'm not good at editing Build levels I decided to not try and mess with the level (would be a shame to fuck up some trigger) and included $WOODS.map from SW 1.1 - it's newer than 1.0 yet still has two chains.

WangGDX had a weird desync between sprite animation and its shadow when I tested it, probably the result of my save\loading, so it might not happen for you.

TNT's bad parts can be made a bit less tedious with some gameplay mods, or really just freelook, because it means you can deal with hitscanners at longer ranges without the vertical auto aim being nearsighted.

I actually fixed it by replacing the OpenAl32.dll with the plugin from my old install. I guess the new openal update broke compatibility.

HTRF in gzdoom is the only virtual surround I've used that doesn't make sfx sound like theyre underwater, and I don't mess with the other sound options outside virtualmidisynth.

I have two suspicions on what's the case here, the first is that the game is built largely on near Sierran rote memorization, where if you don't make the exact right moves at every step, you're killed, and the second is that the guy doesn't know how to make the enemies easily understandable, where there's either too much of a random element to reliably counter them, or they just don't telegraph well if they're hurt, if they're attacking, etc.

New maps and new blood don't have to make an appearance with a bangout like Dwell. Have you even touched The Forgotten Nightmare? Null Bearing? Brick Red? Flooded Ruins? Nice maps, low on spectacle. Quake 1's mapping community is never going to be as big as Doom's, but it's survived 20 years, it can survive 20 more at this pace. I don't mean to sound like "we have Quake at home," but I can't stand negativity borne of ignorance; dumptruck_ds has spoken much this year about making more mapping videos for 2021, the vkQuake dev is moving his work to Quakespasm-Spiked from Quakespasm, the already amazing mappack ter_shibboleth got the a revamp for the Drake mod, and I have the lowdown on another big project coming out for a relatively unknown modpack in 2021, of which I can't say more on. Quake's doing better than it ever has.

Anyone know why PrBoom+ is being a faggot to me? It's a 192x192 texture, it looks fine in GzDoomBuilder (bugfix), and in GzDoom, but for some reason it cuts off the side of the texture for me here. I've looked at the patch table and texture lump, and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Still suffering from mapper's block, so I decided to implement the BOOT KNIFE. No sound yet, unfortunately (if somebody knows where in the BBC radio dramas he yells BOOT KNIFE, I'm all ears. At least there no such occurrence in Wanted Dead or Alive).

Can attest to that. Never really cared for MM8BDM and Complex Doom so it becomes a problem when that's what mainly attracts what's left of the playerbase, especially since there's way less people playing Zandronum now compared to 4+ years ago. I miss when WADs like DBZone, Idiotic LMS, Jumpmaze, Real Guns Advanced, Doomcenter, Push, Armageddon 1 and 2 Invasion and All Out War all used to attract a ton of players (I know the last one isn't to everyone's liking but I would still much rather play it than Megaman or Complex.)

I started playing ZDaemon more often earlier this year and it's probably the most fun I've had playing multiplayer Doom in a long time. Wish I hadn't overlooked it for so long since I'd been mainly playing Zandronum since 2009 (started playing when it was still called Skulltag), though back then I could always count on there being at least a few ST/Zandro servers running something I'd enjoy. Its engine isn't as powerful as the aforementioned ports, though it being a more vanilla experience isn't really something that I feel put off by, at least not anymore.

Maybe if version 4.0 of Zandronum would finally come out, it could help renew people's interest, though that doesn't seem like it's going to come out anytime soon. A shame to see the current state that it's in considering that it's the reason Doom is easily the game I've played the most in my life (I probably have at least a couple thousand hours logged in it just from both Skulltag and Zandronum at this point, started playing the former 11 years ago so that wouldn't surprise me.) but oh well, I guess we'll just have to see what the future has in store for it.

It adds several more enemies and completely overhauls the AI. And the arsenal doesn't feel bloated because each weapon has a purpose to counter all the different AI and situations (plus weapon transformations to change their purpose) so you're actually able to enjoy maps that were designed for classic Doom. Things like placing sticky frag grenades on walls that you know will release a horde that could instantly kill you after you interact with a button, or switching your BFG to guard mode so you can deploy an energy shield before falling down a hole or elevator that you suspect has a horde at the bottom. Then there's ammo conservation, the UAC Railgun can one/two-shot most enemies but eats up your energy ammo (which is valuable because BFG/Tesla rifle), so you'll have to use all the different grenade types from your grenade launcher (Cryogenic, Incendiary, Acid, Sticky) instead.

It makes the game 100x harder and more tactical, you actually have to memorize your loadout and be aware of your surroundings so you can prepare accordingly before triggering a trap, and it's really not trial and error, it's about using your brain and preparing accordingly. It's honestly the best game I've played.

There are a lot of guns, each with alternate firemodes and upgrades, but it works itself out with the added enemies and if you play rifle/pistol start. I'll say this, the only real bloat I've noticed is the minigun having two firemodes now, chaingun and gatling gun. There is no real benefit, nor any discernible difference to using the chaingun whatsoever, so I'd classify that as bloat.

It took me 3 months to master Project Brutality. You'll have your ass handed to you on a plate at the beginning.

Go to options > customize controls. There you'll find "Activate Weapon Special", that's your weapon transformation key, mine is set to M3, "Equipment Selection Wheel" are your grenades, mines and Leech, mine is set to that key left of the Z key. If you want to test each weapon and their respective upgrades bring up the console and type "give weapons" then spam "summon upgradespawner" and pick up all the items, then type "give leechgrenade" so you unlock the Leech.

If you're playing on the hardest difficulty you're supposed to be tactical and slow, it's nothing like BD. Check every corner like you would in real life, do not rush, and only use your flashlight when necessary because it will alert enemies and they'll shred you if you're detected.

I'd say the recoil is worse due to the view swerve and motion blur on all the weapons. I've disabled as much of that shit as possible and it's still pretty goddamn obnoxious. I'm not fond of excessive blur effects on all of the weapons so far. Ammo is tight on this highest difficulty too, which is to be expected. Enemy reaction times are also high, but consistently high on everything.
I've played a lot of Hideous Destructor so going slow isn't a problem, but given the higher speeds of everything, tactical plays aren't really as useful, it's more about just falling back and bottlenecking right now.

Be mindful of your usage of decorative corpses because they're not decorative at all in HD. Go easy on the explosive barrels. Generally take it easy on ambushes, whether on the other side of a teleporter, traditional monster closets, or especially instant-raise floors. Berserk only lasts two minutes and isn't even guaranteed on the vanilla spawn, so don't provide it just once and then expect it to be used throughout the map.

It's not hard to make maps that play well with HD - Kuchitsu and Diabolus Ex weren't even made with it in mind at all, yet they've both ended up as prime examples of how to do it right. You'll get a pretty fun result if you just make vanilla-style maps that aren't targeted at the 2020 Doom gods.

The pistol and axe are good for that, and the pistol comes with a silencer option (weapon special wheel) as well so you don't alert the entire room. You can use the axe against most enemies if you're good at dodging, and you can also kill hell knights by kicking them in the nuts and then chopping them up with the axe, saves you a lot of ammo.

Before opening a door that you suspect has a horde behind, you can place mines behind you (not too close to the door obviously) before opening it, and you can use the grenade launcher with incendiary ammo to clear up rooms infested with imps and possessed. If you suspect that room is filled to the brim with big demons then you can use the stun grenade, or the alt fire from the lightning gun (upgraded special for the heavy plasma rifle) for the same effect, it will stun all the enemies in the room so you can see what's in there without getting shredded, then you can use the demon tech rifle's alt fire to possess a demon so they aggro each other and you can safely pick them off from distance.

I'm talking about the motion blur on the sprites, almost every weapon gets coated in vaseline when it leaves the idle state, it's pretty fucking absurd, and yeah, the door logic applies to HD as well, but with HD you generally have better access to alternative options: like being able to shoot through the door, planting grenade tripwires, or using IEDs, I have not found a single mine in all of the playtime I've given PB so far.
