Did this documentary add something which wasn't mentioned in the book? Any small anecdote would count.

It's pretty OK and a breezy watch like a lot of modern docs are but if you've read the book it's pretty redundant.

Finally, someone comparing the Genesis to it's real competitor, the NES. The SNES was so out of the Genesis' league it's not even comparable.

Yeah, people often forget the SNES came out 2 years after the genesis's release.

Europe was Sega's biggest market by far upon the launch of the Mega Drive. Without Europe a bunch of the best Master System games would never have even been made. And what influence did America have on Sega in the long-term? Diddly fucking squat. SoJ still did whatever the fuck they wanted and what they thought was necessary for the Japanese market.

You ignorant, self-obsessed toerag

The book doesn't have any made up stories in it, it just has a weird amount of imagined dialogue. But the dialogue in no way alters the facts of the story, just...illustrates it, in a clumsy way.

>> No.7021487

>>7018247
You don't need to be a weeb to know some the shit in the book is made up. Like no one has ever been able to verify if Sega was going to make a movie based on Sgt. Kabuki Man.

>The book doesn't have any made up stories in it, it just has a weird amount of imagined dialogue.
Yeah enough made up dialogue that in turn twists stories into pure fiction. Again, no has ever been able to verify plans to make a Kabuki Man game, nor has anyone ever verified if Nakayama ever yelled and berated Sega employees for not making the Mega Drive successful in Japan.

Face it, this book was essentially the author shopping around a script to get produced into some sort of dramatic film like those Steve Jobs biopics at the time, and in turn no one in Hollywood bit. It's also telling how many Sega of Japan employees have refrained from ever commenting on it.

Wow, Japanese people are tight-lipped about business? Consider me fucking surprised!!!

>> No.7021525

>>7021515
Yes, people are shocked that someone made money from telling stories that they were never contacted about besides a bunch of ex-American employees no longer affiliated with the company. Sorry you think this failed script is fact.

>> No.7021540

>>7021525
Yes, because it's the loose threads about the Sgt Kabukiman that they needed to put in there to make it a best seller!

I'm not saying I think Console Wars is a perfect book, I got through it in a breeze because I was interested in the subject. It's very clumsily written. and total credit to your point: I DO think that all of that basically fake dialogue was there to make it read like a fucking Netflix miniseries or something. I think Blake Harris was hoping for that, which is...retarded.

But anyway yeah I'm not going to be blown away that a bunch of Sega people from the 1990s--many of whom are at executive roles in the company now--aren't going to air out their dirty laundry for some gaijin faggot.

It's pretty much impossible to prove or disprove if the stuff was made up, since the guy could have been into /x/ shit like ESP and used it to read their minds. The CIA has been experimenting with that stuff since way back.

No, that's just an example of something the author pulled right out of their ass.
>many of whom are at executive roles in the company now--aren't going to air out their dirty laundry for some gaijin faggot.
More like many of them are long since retired or at different companies and would lose nothing at telling some behind the scenes stories of what Sega was like in Japan as SoA made the Genesis a success. Hideki Sato has long since left Sega, they could've easily contacted him to get some insight on at least how they came to develop the Mega Drive and the Saturn, but no, let's just talk to the yanks and how the japs hated them.

That story isn't really about Japan though except for the set-up as to how the two companies came to be in the first place. Console Wars is the story of how Sega managed to unseat Nintendo from market dominance, and that story IS basically the story of Sega poaching a toy marketing genius to dig into the American market.

That story isn't about Yamauchi and Arakawa and Yuji Naka and Miyamoto, it's about Tom Kalinske and Al Nilssen and Peter Main and Howard Lincoln and Howard Phillips. Console Wars is a story about Sega penetrating the American market.
