What are some good SNES multiplayer games? Also I would be interested in what console you prefer most for local multiplayer games
I have the feeling that many games were only considered good, because not much else was available. It's mostly weird game design decisions that hold many games back.
For example I played The Great Battle IV. For the second player the game is really not enjoyable. The camera focuses on the first player and even when the second player is still on the screen you constantly get teleported to P1. Lost Vikings has a similar problem which makes it not fun for me.
On the other hand I had a lot of fun with Top Gear, Goof Troop, Bomberman and even Zombies ate my Neighbours.
I think local multiplayer games are an interesting topic. With single player games you can easily let yourself be blinded by nostalgia, but when playing with someone that never played the game before, basic problems appear much more severe.

2 player SNES was never that great. Many games that are very fun single player become incredibly unfun when you have to share your continues with someone who has never played before.

I agree that VS games seem much more playable
Panel de Pon, NHL, Smash Tennis and Tetris are some of my favorites

That's anything cooperative, isn't it? Chain's only as strong as its weakest link.

Tetris Battle Gaiden if you like action puzzle games like Panel de Pon. Metal Warriors is a unique competitive deathmatch that can get pretty tense as players jump in and out of mechs trying to keep up with or get the drop on each other. Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 for the quintessential cooperative action RPGs.

Darius Twins is good if you want a 2 player introductory level shmup

Syndicate was fun in coop, up to 4 players

Besides Goof Troop, ZamN, Joe & Mac games, Pocky and Rocky games, and ANY of the 2-player Mickey Mouse games, play the DKC games. Other player gets control once you take a single hit.
No one has said Kirby Super Star yet? Do people not know you can have player 2 control the Helper?
Turtles in Time is good if you want a beat-em-up.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja(Ganbare Goemon) is a great RPGish beat-em-up type game.
Jurassic Park 2:The Chaos Continues and Sunset Riders are decent run n gun type games.

Thanks for the recommendations
I really had a hard time filtering the genuine fun games from the nostalgia ones
To add to the thread I really had a good time with Biker Mice from Mars

Vegas Stakes, and you can play four players with one controller.

Arcade beatemups and sports games are the only ones worth playing playing multiplayer (assuming you mean COOP and not turn based).

Contra 3, Secret of Mana, Turtles in Time. Uniracers, Street Fighter 2, NBA Jam. I think Final Fight 2 and 3 were co op but not the first one.
