How do you guys feel about overclocked SNES games, like Star Fox at a higher frame right.

Overclocked N64 with Perfect Dark is a dream.

would be stupid not to try out all advantages of emulation. Of course starfox at a higher frame rate sounds great!

how do i do this

If you’re emulating a game, then any concerns about having a “authentic experience” or “what the developers intended” surely goes out the window.

Overclock it and use filters to smooth the image out since these early 3D games look terrible with how sharp modern screens are.

Wait, you can overclock an SNES? I never thought about that. That is so dang cool!

>> No.6685983

>>6685885
It can't be done with the original code. It would need a ground up remake for it to work

Wasn't one of the later StarFox games a remake of this anyway?

bsnes HD has this feature. Fun to mess around with. It can also get games to render in 21:9 aspect ratio which really only works for mode 7 games.

I don't think you can overclock the SNES, its designed around the 60 fps NTSC signal. You can overclock carts though, they have a seperarte clock.

You can't just make accusations like that without some evidence. I ASSHUME you have some?

Last time I tried this it just sped the game up

It does anon but I've heard some say they prefer it at 25 frames instead of 10. I've never tried it myself which I why I made this thread.

>> No.6686306

>>6686052
Not that guy but if you run parallel or mupen at full speed you can get steady 30fps and it does absolutely play better most of the time however because these games are made to use the slowdown, the games actually speed up and slow down at random intervals

>> No.6686326

>>6685554
How do I feel about them?

How do I fucking feel?!

I HATE them, Anon. Old games should only be played at low frame rates, because choppy animation gets me HARD. How the fuck do you expect me to jerk off to silky smooth 60 frames per second? Don't ever ask such a stupid question again, of course I prefer worse frame rates, you faggot.

>I don't think you can overclock the SNES
wrong

>> No.6686504

does it actually increase the frame rate or does it just make the game run faster?

1964 emulator can run Goldeneye and PD at 60fps with mouselook. Feels really good, when it doesn't crash.

>> No.6687638

>>6685554
Dumb question but is this just a feature in some emulators? There are a number of SNES games I'd revisit if I could get rid of slowdown.

Stunt Race FX and Road Rash are pretty goddamn nice with overclocking.

>> No.6687679

Is shit.
The game plays faster and that obviously is not intended.

>> No.6687694

>>6686032
They figured out how to separate the timings and the overclock work great

>> No.6687698

>>6687679
Who cares about what was intended? Many snes games feel sluggish, speeding them up would be good. Star Fox is a perfect example.

>> No.6687718

>>6686230
Good thing the source code for Star Fox was leaked so it can be modified to accommodate a faster SNES.

>> No.6687885

>>6687698
I agree that it would be nice if the game could just not have any slowdowns at all, but sometimes it was treated like slow motion and designed around that. So speeding up the game can make it not play properly at times.

>> No.6687935

>>6687885
The way I look at it, what wasn't intended doesn't matter. If it's more fun at a higher speed that's the ticket.

>> No.6687971

>>6687935
The idea it was even intended is retarded. They didn't intend for the game to run at 3fps. It was a hard limit of the tech they were forced to abide by.

>> No.6687976

>>6685983
Star Fox 64 is a remake/retelling of the original Star Fox.
Star Fox Zero is also a remake/retelling of the original Star Fox.

>> No.6688012

>>6687971
Right. And fixing that makes the game better isn't that good?

>> No.6688034

>>6685983
It can be done with the original code, technically speaking. You can change out the clock crystal within the Cartridge to change what frequency the SuperFX runs at, and can improve the framerate at the cost of things just in general running too fast.

>> No.6688035

>>6687971
shmups have intended slowdown for example.
the 3fps of starfox are obviously hardware limitation, but making it run faster is not intended.
call me when it runs at 60fps or 30fps but at the same game speed as those 3fps as intended.

>> No.6688061

>>6687638
Yes. You can use it in bsnes HD beta

>> No.6688069

>>6685983
Yes it can, you just overclock it in software. Original game had an unlocked janky framerate anyways - lock it to 20 or 30 and it would probably play fine, though some sections may be made with the assumption that it'll run slower or faster.

>> No.6688831

>>6688035
>call me when it runs at 60fps or 30fps but at the same game speed as those 3fps as intended.

What would the point be then? To keep it slow as molasses?

>> No.6688832

I ALWAYS overclock whenever there's any slowdown on the original system. Have no reason not to.

>> No.6688980

>>6688832
Mega Man X can get significantly harder without the slowdown dodging many projectiles

>> No.6689010

>>6688831
not him. the idea is that your ship and everything else is moving at the same speed but there are more visible frames of movement. it will move smoothly but not faster

>> No.6689016

>>6688831
SF progresses at around the same speed as SF64, it's just displayed at like a fourth of the frame rate. When you overlook you're making the game progress at like twice the speed. Its really not designed to play that way and would be like playing SF64 with fast forward on

If the overstock could just add more frames while keeping the stock progression speed that would be great. As is its not a great experience either way

>> No.6689028

>>6688831
the point is to not play as if fast forward is enabled.

>> No.6689940

>>6689028
The overclock doesn't make it run in "fast forward" they've been able to separate the timings.

>> No.6691579

>>6689028
That makes sense. To me the whole point of overclocking would be to speed up the game. My biggest problem with Starfox is how slow everything was.
