Why do japanese retro games suck? Feels like all they have are different flavors of platformers, jarpigs, fighting, shmup, and the likes. Where are the innovations, freshness, and breakthroughs?

Asian market has their own little bubble of interests, and occasionally some of them break through for the whole world to enjoy. Same thing with Slavic games, there's literally hundreds upon hundreds of awesome games just floating around there you've never even heard of because no one knows how to translate Martian.
