6436123 No.6436123 [Reply] [Original]

I've seen numerous threads on this board and other forums about CRPGs and listing those that don't get enough praise/fly under the radar: what about JRPGs? Which ones do you feel are totally underrated, overlooked and otherwise ignored by the fans of the genre?

Reminder to keep it retro and that titles from a well-known series are applicable even if its sequels are always discussed.

Mother.
Often downplayed and underrated by EarthBound fans, claiming it's just an 8-bit version of EB, sadly a lot of people skip it because of that and are missing on one of the best 8-bit RPGs.
The combat is pretty basic, but the game design is very interesting and, in difference to Earthbound, Mother is less linear, and traveling from one town to another actually feels like a journey instead of just a few steps inside of a cave that connects one map with the other, Mother is actually just one big ass map, probably one of the biggest maps in JRPGs.
The plot is also more interesting and layered than Earthbound's.
Earthbound is more vague with its storytelling, and centers more on particular sub-plots, that loosely converge in the alien invasion theme, but in Mother everything feels like it has a purpose. The whole story of Maria, George and Gyiyg is fantastic.
I'm not trashing EB though, it's also a good game, but I find it unfair that many people pretend EB is a remake of Mother 1 that renders the first game obsolete. That's absolutely false.

Somewhere between 20 or 30 hours, probably less if you use a guide, but don't do that.
You will be around level 30 when you're at the end of the game.

Thanks for saying it. Mother 1 shouldn't be brushed off. Not as good as 2 or 3, but still a great game especially for a famicom era RPG.

>>6436282
Charming game but you have to have A LOT of patience for it especially the PS1 version. Battle animations are slow and for some reason they didn't think to include showing markers for the range of your weapons. I do think that the American Release of Revelations Persona is kinda unfairly bashed. Of course its not faithful to the source but It's got some mid 90s American charm to it not unlike EarthBound. P2 is much better.

>>6436465
I'll have to give this one a shot some time. It's a pretty impressive looking remake of the original.

As for my choice, it's not really underrated but I feel like FF4 doesn't get much love generally. Similar to my stance on Mother 1, definitely not worth brushing off as old and antiquated. Give it a chance.

don't get trolled, playing mother 1 without a guide will leave you feeling homeless on another planet tripping balls on drugs you never took, and getting gameovered because youre under leveled or supposed to have PK Beam x by x but you also didn't grab x from x so now you don't have x way to defeat x so now you just keep getting game overed so you eventually look up a guide and realized you fucked yourself.

Play the NES version using the uncut patch.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3623/

It can be patched to any rom, either Earthbound Zero or MOTHER. Use a Japanese MOTHER (J) Patch and the Mother Uncut Normal Patch.

The patch uncensors all the graphics for the beta US version, inserts Tomato's English translation into the game. (Tomato made this translation for MOTHER 1+2 for the GBA.) Tomato was the main translator of Mother 3. The translation revises typos and is based off the original script for accuracy and better writing. Easy mode isn't good as it simply doubles experience and money and halves the encounter rate. You'll be very overpowered quickly, it disrupts the pacing of the game.

Usa a guide lightly for an authentic experience: remember that all games back then, particularly RPGs, assumed you have a manual which you obviously won't. Look up what Spells and Items do, with the internet battle mechanics can properly be explained now which is another blessing.

USE instead of EATing the Bread item (bought in Dept. store) in the menu to turn it into Bread Crumbs/make a teleportation point (first use) and to "follow the trail"/teleport back to the initial position you used it at. (second use) With a little planning it's the perfect way to cut back on random encounters a lot since it works anywhere.

Use a map for Duncan's Factory to literally save hours of time. Make sure you get the Franklin Badge from it, an invaluable equipment item that there is only two of that will save 2 of your 3 party members from countless 1 hit death spells.

Get the party member Ana as soon as you can. You can get her as soon as you gain access to the train. She's in Snowman.

Good to take time with the game and not use a guide, as this wholesome message from Shigesato Itoi states.

But don't be afraid to use a guide because there's some cryptic stuff and missable important NPCs and locales. And it won't hold your hand about what to do or where to go next always.

The last cave and final area was not balanced or properly play-tested. Even at a reasonable level many encounters will one-shot your whole party in one turn. Hoard PSI-Stones which replenish MP in inventory storage for the end, and use the spell that automatically flees battles (fleeing normally has a 50% success rate) when you encounter the cheapest enemies, replenishing MP as needed.

MOTHER is the original name of the game and the only version of a rom that's a version of an official release. The original prototype rom that was intended to be released in America but never was had the game known as simply Earthbound on the title-screen. When Demiforce discovered this rom it was released on the internet as "Earthbound Zero" to distinguish it from Earthbound on the SNES and the title screen was altered to include the text "Zero."

Hence, there are 3 different roms of the game. The original MOTHER (J) Japanese release, Earthbound (American Prototype) and Earthbound Zero (American Prototype with title screen alteration by Demiforce)

When you patch MOTHER (J) with the MOTHER Uncut Normal patch, it adds the enhancements from the American version such as the option to run, while maintaining the purity of the Japanese original (uncensored graphics)

Chaos World, possibly the first JRPG with an "adventurer guild" where you can send your party members on errands (like in FFTA). It also lets you build your own party from different classes and has a day/night cycle, very ambitious for a NES jarpig

Maybe try actually contributing to the thread instead of whining about thing you don't like because of boogeymen fandom. They're actually calling out Earthbound fans for underrating and spreading misinfo on the first game.

Good question, but remember only one room in one dungeon was changed. The one in magicant.

https://earthboundcentral.com/2011/02/eb0-vs-m1-magicant-caves/

I believe it has the patch includes the updated localized version. As far as I know all patches are the same, it just lets you patch any revision of the rom of your choice with the corresponding patch so everything is guaranteed to work properly. It should be the updated version: you are not missing anything except tedium with the original. It doesn't make it "harder" or more interesting, just means cheap dead ends and more random encounters. This room of all rooms should be straightforward since it's where you leave Magicant.

OP is about underrated games, not haydden jaymes. Mother 1 is definitely underrated, and by Earthbound fans themselves.

There were more changes:
>The prison room was initially located lower on the mountain, where EVE can access it. The cavern to this room was completely removed in the NES version.
I know it's not really that important and that most people won't care about more difficult maps, but it's nice to play the game in its original way too. The funny thing is that the most difficult version of the game, original JP version, doesn't have the run button.
