Which is the best of the holy trinity?

>> No.6404817

Chrono Trigger, easily. After that it's close, but I prefer Earthbound.

Only good game there is chrono trigger.

Never played Mario RPG that much and when I did the weird perspective gave me a headache. The graphics are also pretty ugly and I felt the game overall from what little I played was pretty boring.

Nearly finished Earthbound, great game.

But i'd say my favorite of the 3 is definitely Chrono Trigger, it had the best story, the best characters, the best music, and the combat system is the most fun of the 3.

Damn really? this game is a lot shorter than I thought then.

Also does anyone know if the steam version is any good? does it have the secret boss and the cutscenes from the DS version? I heard the steam version has a shoddy translation or something?

>> No.6404830

>>6404829
steam version is based on the mobile version which feels very cheaply done.

Earthbound. Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger are alright, but I was never really into swords and magic and shit like that so Chrono never appealed to me as much. EB is just brimming with great humor and I loved the world and the story. Definitely the most memorable final boss fight of the 3 games to.

>> No.6404836

Earthbound's length was a bit bloated in my opinion, I got quite bored around the 20 hour mark.

Super Mario RPG is OK but Paper Mario & Paper Mario TTYD were both better.

Still haven't gotten round to playing Chrono Trigger, it's on my list

>>6404836
Earthbound meanders a lot, many of the weirder elements get introduced out of left field and don't quite mesh with what the game. Comes off more as trying to be weird and quirky.

>> No.6404850

>>6404842
The battle system isn't that interesting either, seems to me that the setting/atmosphere and its supposed 'quirkiness' are what carries the game. I did enjoy these parts, they just weren't enough to carry the length of the game for me.

>> No.6404858

>>6404850
Yeah, the battle system has some neat ideas with the separate and limited inventories, rolling HP, but rarely does enough to make the limited inventory an interesting mechanic for anyone but Jeff and the rolling HP isn't utilized very well by any of the enemies thanks to its speed. I had a similar feeling by the end of the game, kinda faded out and like I should just get it over with, making the whole thing lack satisfaction.

Steam version has the two DS dungeons but no FMVs. It also has widescreen and a really ugly hud.

I tried playing this in the early 2000s and I couldn't get into it. Why do you guys think it's so good? Should I try and replay it now? I'm honestly thinking about trying again, but I don't want to wastey time. Why do you like it so much?

Chrono trigger
If we're talking entire series
Paper Mario: Thousand year door > Mother 3 > Chrono trigger > earthbound > Mario rpg

I dunno if I would consider those the three best RPGs on the system. Chrono Trigger is arguably.

SMRPG has by far the best gameplay, CT the best aesthetics and story, and EB is the most original of the bunch. Summarily, SMRPG wins rather easily simply because its visuals and story aren't that bad either while gameplay is just great all around and some of the best int he genre, second only to TTYD perhaps.

>>6404886
Chrono Trigger is worth it and it isn't slow or anything either. It starts off with a trip to the past, then some consequences in the present, and then crazy shit starts happening. Crazy, but cartoony and fun. A truly grand adventure across the planet's entire lifespan, hunting down a parasite that's been gnawing at it for millions of years. It's great. If only gameplay wasn't an afterthought.

SMRPG because I like to actually have fun and I'm not a tryhard

Earthbound by a mile for me. I don't really care for Mario RPG and I prefer ff6 over chrono trigger. Even then I think I prefer Earthbound over FF6.

I played Mario back in the day because it was Mario. I was a retard at that age but I did finish the game after max leveling everyone. I played Earthbound when it came out on Wii U because I didnt have anything else to play on it. It was ok, had a lot of "quality of life features" for it's time but the writing was Reddit as hell. I dont think it deserves its untouchable status really.

Chrono Trigget worth playing? And best version?

>> No.6406373

Mario RPG, most definitely. Unique and engaging, actually feels like a game and not purely a menu scroller.
Chrono Trigger is fun but forgettable.
EarthBound is barely playable, props to anybody with the willpower to finish it.

Played Mario RPG when I was younger, loved it and defeated the true final boss. Tried to replay it recently and I fuck up constantly, the timing of the action gameplay is very off. I don't know if I have to trust the visual or the sound.
Earthbound is fine but the gameplay si very unfair. I like the subtext of the story.
Chrono Trigger is a movie. Boring.
Overall I prefer Phantasy Star 4 and Fire Emblem 4 but I have shit taste in RPG

Golden Sun on the GBA is better

Earthbound is the second worst game I ever played. No joy or fun to be found.
