Don't play special edition then it sucks, the content isn't worth the changes in physics and massive track skips

The dishwasher graphics were done intentionally to keep the 60 fps. And what makes wipeout tracks any better? They're all flat with rails running at a turtle pace. In F-Zero you get loops and a true sense of speed which matter more in a racing game. Maybe you might like pic related.

I like the F-Zero series a lot, even the GBA games, but there's no denying that there's more to Wipeout's gameplay and physics, it's a more complex game.

I guess if you like combat in racing, but I find it far too slow for my tastes. Always seemed like a lesser version of Episode 1 Racer. I will say I do love the whole Y2K retro futurist style paired with that heavenly trance/D&B soundtrack.

I like the Greatest Hits edition of JM2. Less racers, and runs way faster because of it.

>>6384448
Its not just the graphics also are you kidding? Wipeout tracks all have some major dips and bumps that take advantage of the pitching mechanics, the tracks get very narrow and twisty especially considering how much more punishing the physics are. Loops are a non element they are just straights or long turns presented differently. Sense of speed is relative, play F-Zero for half an hour and its speed will stop feeling fast or impressive since your brain will adapt. Jet Moto has interesting mechanics actually but the framerates are unacceptably bad

>> No.6384483

>>6384476
You sound like you didn't go far in them, since they have a Mario Kart-like system where you start slow, then go increasing in speed... the fastest class is pretty darn fast and tough.

I wish there was a NTSC patch and rebalance patch. NTSC patch might be easy to handle and carry out too.

>>6384120

I think they made ships faster or something and they didn't have enough time to properly playtest it. So the ships tend to quite literally fly in some sections.

>> No.6384504

Shame 3 never got an N64 version. Wipeout 64 is a port of XL with tracks and features from 1 as well. N64 is a better system but wipeout 3 has better draw distance and 64!

>>6384487
All Greatest Hits copies are the Championship Edition. That cover on the left actually wasn't used, but in-game they all do say "Championship Edition"
The reason why the Greatest Hits edition is altered was due to the original master disc being destroyed, and the "Championship Edition" being a modified version of the game that the producer had requested for private use, which ended up being submitted to Sony when it came time to print the Greatest Hits edition.

I like 3 better but you can't go wrong with any of the original trilogy, it's a matter of taste really. Just try to unlock the phantom class and you'll see the speed is no joke.

I agree with the above anon that F-Zero speed stops being impressive once you get used to it. They're different games, in F-Zero's higher difficulties you're competing against tougher rivals, in Wipeout you'll be competing against the track itself (despite the combat elements), trying to survive, not crashing in every turn.

I like F-Zero but man is X ugly. Even mods can't fix it. It's visually only a step above a SNES Super FX 3D game. No wonder X nearly killed the F-Zero series and Wipeout outsold it.

Aestetically I love the original 3 games since they have a real grounded cyberpunk future look and feel. The tracks are clearly concrete and you see a variety of believable locations. The sequels turn everything into plastic and you're just playing in this shiny world. It looks so stupid.

yes, 2097 is best. I'm going to differ from the other anon and say play your way through Rapier and unlock everything yourself suing the quirex. It's worth the effort, and will make the piranha car feel indescribable when you finally get it. The game doesn't really begin until then.

both great games. but classic wipeout base gameplay is much harder and faster. I like fzero x for playing with friends and burning all your meter as soon as you get it and trying to finish with 1HP.
Wipeout has much more simulationist physics and could have been have been a really great racing series if they didn't rely so heavily on the mario kart formula that killed it.
>>6384512
not /vr/ but BallisticNG is a spiritual remake of the first three wipeout games (the classic trilogy). It's a mix of the three physics systems with modern stuff like a proper track editor, mod support and multiplayer.

>> No.6387283

>>6386659
Nah, problem with nu Wipeout is that its casualized and just less fun the ships all have too much grip, pitching is too situational, they fucked up the air brakes and changed an elegant, versatile system of sliding your ship into two very simple systems - air brakes and side shifts. Which is stupid, overcomplicates controls and removes depth. Before to do side shifts you could opposite brake, now its some clumsy double tap input. Removing boost management was a huge mistake too, the flips have less depth and the inputs are obnoxious especially when going for good times. That's not even mentioning the sterile aesthetics and mediocre OST

They're incredibly fine tuned, especially when you're racing at higher speeds. Play Stanza Inter in Wipeout 3 to see what I mean, it has nothing that pops out (no jumps, corkscrews etc) but is one of the tightest most enjoyable tracks in the entire series.
