Combat is too frustrating, even a simple mook can murder you in seconds and bosses are overkill. Grinding for money takes a fuckton of time too. Shame, because I initially liked the game for it's slapstick anime feel.

You know this reminds me I need to get a sega cd emulator up and running and finally trying this game out.

It's really nice with the unworked design patch to restore balance.
Has somebody played the PC-88/98 version ?

I played it last year for the first time, I used the Un-Worked Designs patch and played on a CRT with original hardware, the ideal configuration? I thought it was a blast! The gameplay may not be incredibly complex, which suited me fine, it was easy to pick and do a play through. With the patch.. the game is super easy, I breezed through it.

I don't know about this. Because I really enjoyed Popful Mail, I looked around for something similar from this period of time and I don't think there's much. Would love to be proven wrong.

There's Lunar on the Sega CD and the anime styled stuff on the PC Engine, much of the later not translated and less sophisticated graphically due to the less powerful hardware. I think Popful Mail can be singled out as really impressive and novel for when it came out. In the West especially, less so in Japan, but I'd argue there as well.

I was a Lunar fan so I was aware of this game but I never picked it up for some reason.

Sega CD version looks to be the most sloppy version actually. Huge sprites and too much momentum. PC-Engine CD looks like the original PC version at a faster frame rate. This version has very clean precise movement and gameplay.

SFC is the other version, no clue about that one.

I think you're mixing them up with that one that was working in the Lunar translations for the Saturn versions. That one did also do a slight update for the Lunar un-Worked patches this dude did, to fix some sync issues with cutscenes, but that's it, and it was done well.

And honestly, it's good work and if they finish the Saturn stuff (which is just sticking in the Working Design script and VO, no other changes), I don't give a fuck who they say they are.
