Do belt-scrollerfags hold a grudge against fightingfags for killing their genre off?

>> No.6213439

no.
but I hold a grudge against people calling beat'em up's belt scrollers.

>Do people that like A hold a grudge against people that like B for killing their genre off?
yeah totally bro.. can tell you were definitely captain of the debate team.

>> No.6213448

1. No because most play fighting games as well
2. Fighting games didn't "kill" belt scrollers, 3D did forcing them to adapt and turn into modern day 3D beat 'em ups which are still popular
3. It's not that dead, Fight N Rage is excellent and got fairly popular, and Streets of Rage 4 is coming out with production values and marketing most arcade genres could only dream of.

Not really. Beat em ups died because most developers actually sucked at making them, and a strong fighting system ended up being a quality of the general adventure/sandbox genre.

It only seems that fighters killed them because the idiots cashing in on the beat em up craze hopped on to the fighting game craze where it is immediately more obvious your design philosophy sucked donkey balls.

One of the coolest stuff about Tekken 3 was the unlockable beat-'em up mode. Maybe a happy medium would be every game of each genre have the other mode available.

I thought it was cool enough. 2D beat-'em ups were basically dead already, so it was a treat for me.

Sort of liked the story modes for the PS2 Mortal Kombat games too, but I'd probably prefer 2D.

Dunno, I have wide enough tastes in genres, to mostly play on backlog of what is generally considered "good" by the time I get to it.
From what I've seen of it, It looks like the art could use some dynamic outlining, at least I'd like it. Also some healthbars or other damage indicators would be nice, if they're going to give attacks damage dealt numbers, otherwise it's just clutter.

3D is what killed scrollers. The market was flooded with so much of it, lots of kids that would've played them if they were born 5 years earlier never did. They never really recovered from that shift.

The quality of indie games now is higher than the quality of a lot of 2D games from the 80's/90's because of how much more advanced our technology is.

Calling things "indieshit" doesn't actually make them bad. And hundreds of games from the 80's and 90's were also developed on shoe-string budgets. Including producers, 9 people developed the original Super Mario Bros., and its cost has been estimated to be somewhere around 20,000 USD modern day.

There were plenty of garbage games that released in previous decades too, but retards like you gobble them up and praise them as high art. Literally no different.

>> No.6221937

>>6221931
Wtf is the difference, a game being higher quality typically means it's better unless you are talking strictly about surface elements. And you'd be wrong there, modern beat em ups do not look even half as good as the arcade classics.

>> No.6221943

>>6221848
Difference is that in the 90's there were a lot of excellent beat em ups around to offset the shitty ones. These days we get maybe 1-2 good ones a decade. Indie developers saw that most people just button mash and credit feed, and took that as an excuse to not try with their game design. The games can have nice visuals and music, even game feel, but very few developers understand why the genre is fun from a mechanics perspective. At least modern "character action" 3D beat em ups keep the spirit alive somewhat, and are made by people who understand the genre.
