what is the best d pad?

>> No.6063906

SNES controller for standard, Saturn for rocker style. Though I effectively use both the same way (rock the center pivot with the joint of my thumb). The problem with modern dpads is they tend to lack that pronounced joint and you're expecting to press each cardinal directly which is not how a dpad should be used

I am a fan of the neo geo cd pad microswitched stick though and wish more controllers would ape it

>> No.6063912

Saturn or Snes, any other answer is wrong!

Saturn. SNES D-pad is nothing special.

To emulate, PS4's. Pure /vr/, christ who knows, they are all so stiff. I truly hated the SNES d-pad and it put me off from playing Street Fighter for a decade because doing half and quarter circles on that bitch was a nightmare.

???

SNES has a super loose pad, that's why it's so good. I can hardly play panel de pon on anything else because it's so easy to tap directions quickly. I'm not sure what controller you were using

This, although really it's because it's a tiny joystick and joysticks rock. However, a 360 controller with a Pringle lid mod is perfectly acceptable and I hear the Xbone controller is pretty similar to this - and I also hear good things about DS4s and WiiU Pros so in 2019 I done think it's really some kind of holy grail thing - other than the Neo Geo pad, which is a while different animal. Check out a so called "fightpad" for a cheap imitation of the technology.

You sure you aren't thinking of the thumb shredding ps1 dpad? I don't recall my snes pad being particularly stiff, but my thumb remembers that piece of shit ps1 controller.

WiiU pro dpad is great, switch pro dpad is shit, ds4 dpad solid.

Never had an issue with the PS1 dpad. The SNES one was hell on my thumb. Even just doing Sabin's inputs once in a while gave me blisters. It fucking sucked as a d-pad even outside of fighting games.

is it not better to be absolutely sure of what input you're pressing?

>> No.6064120

>>6064109
I don't have any (at least not that I've noticed) input inaccuracies using a dpad that way. I can consistently do DP, pretzel and 360 motions. It just takes far less actual movement to do them since I'm just slightly pivoting the joint of my thumb on the center pivot

Maybe it's just because I grew up doing it that way, but using the tip of your thumb feels clunky and slow

I forget the specifics but using a portion of a pringle's can lid, you can modify an Xbox 360 controller's d-pad to feel much snappier and more responsive.
Similarly, there's a very simple mod you can do to a Switch Pro Controller to beef up the area under the central pivot and make it harder to hit accidental diagonals.

4 face buttons allows you to easily hit all four with very little thumb movement. Your other fingers aren't doing anything, so letting them actuate an additional four shoulder buttons is optimally ergonomic. The proper way to hold a 6 button pad is to put it in your lap and lay your entire hand over the 6 like a fucking fightstick. It's ergonomically terrible.
