I knew like one guy who got an N64 on launch. Most of us had to wait until Christmas or later. By Christmas, they had eight games in the US.
>Super Mario 64
>Pilot Wings 64
>Wave Race 64
>Mortal Kombat Trilogy
>Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
>Killer Instinct Gold
>Cruis'n USA
>Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Having played every one of those games, I gotta say, that's a pretty solid line-up.
Also, each of those games cost the modern equivalent of $100, with the N64 itself costing the equivalent of $330. Most parents aren't going to drop $430 in September, plus $100 for each additional game (plus you had to buy a memory card and extra controller), especially with Christmas not long off. Launching it earlier with a few games got it in the stores where kids could try it out and get hyped.

Well, everyone knows the N64 was overall, a truly dogshit system with a few sparkling gems in it's catalog. It's not worth delving into the how and why since this is well understood by now.

But this is a stupid line of reasoning with which to shit on it, when so many other valid ones are available.

Since the N64 was aimed at and preferred by small children, one has to consider that kids will play the same thing or watch the same movie a million fucking times and not get bored of it.

I had a gameboy pocket that may as well have had Pokemon Red fused into the cart slot for how often I ever wanted to or did play anything else. Mario 64 was a game that many kids spent months on and was no doubt in the rotation for years in many households.

Also, N64 games cost a million dollars each, and when you're relying on your parents to get the games for you, it's not like you're just getting everything that comes out anyways. 0/10 troll.

Yes, we've had this thread (literally) 1000 times over the past month. We all know that the N64 had a very small library. You get told every single time that it had a far higher good game to bad game ratio than the PS1 and that it was better for multiplayer games. At this point you are just spamming this shit for replies.

Meaningless since you should be skipping the bad games for both platforms, and when it comes to good games, the playstation buried the n64 dozens of times over.

No matter how many boomer/zoomer layers you wrap this in, this is still cope.

I had some cousins with only a PAL Sega Saturn, then a Nintendo 64. Even my 8 yo self could tell how fucking miserable they were whenever they tried to show off what games they had. They replayed them so many times they grew sick of them.
The library situation was dire, even in their twilight years, and even with import solutions.

PlayStation owners didn't have to replay the same game for months and piracy was a thing for "kids who only could afford one or two games for Christmas a year". Even a kid trying the same thing with a PS1 demo disc of select levels from 3 different games had a better time than a kid surviving for months off one single game from arcade experiences like NiGHTs, Pilotwings and F-Zero that could be finished fairly quickly.

Just because the N64 didn't have a slew of fighters, shoot em ups or RPGs doesn't mean that it didn't have a lot of excellent titles.

There's many under appreciated titles on the N64 that most people have never even played; it also had all the best wrestling games, and the ISS series gave the PS football games more than a run for their money.

What fucking games are you going to rent for your N64 when barely any were even out at the time? What kind of argument even is this? I was alive too, it's not even a Team Boomie-Zoomie thing, the point of the post is that the launch list was tiny, just like the library for the damn system. You know what argument would make sense instead of spouting off like a geriatric ex-Funcoland cashier? Quality over quantity. You almost had it right with your first sentence and then you just devolved into fucking mush after that.

idk what everyone else itt is talking about, when i was 12 years old i was buying an n64 cart every month because i had a fucking job, just like all the other 12 year olds. you'd go to school, come home and play a round or two of goldeneye mp, then it was off to mcdonalds until around midnight. homework, bed, 4 hours of sleep, repeat. just because you were a bunch of jobless lazy 12 year olds without steady cash income from your dayjobs you should've had doesn't mean everyone was. yep, i still remember saving up my wages, going to ebgames, and being disappointed that there still weren't any new n64 releases. What is it about the Nintendo 64 that makes detractors so passionate about hating it?
fanboys are also passionate, but that's understandable, fanboys will be fanboys... but the N64 is a console that also manages to have "anti-fanboys", or something like that, people that are obsessed with it, even if they don't like it. It's weird.

A lot of the N64 library were mostly new IPs, or exclusives that PlayStation fanboys have never heard of.

There were also a bunch of really good 3rd party ports for the N64 that again, the PlayStation didn't get or were terrible because the hardware couldn't handle it.

>> No.6045507

>>6045209
I think it's just that many N64 fanboys are just so unbearable with how they go around spouting their opinions as facts. I've encountered quite a few over the years and they all fit the same mold:
>The N64 was their first console.
>Think it was the first console to do 3D
>Think Mario 64 was the first 3D game
>Think OOT/MM are the greatest games ever made. Bonus points for claiming they're JRPGs when you bring up the plethora of JRPGs on the PS1.
>Completely oblivious to what was available on other consoles such as the PS1, Saturn, or even the Dreamcast.
>Will downplay any shortcoming of the system as a non-issue or even try to claim it's a strength.
>Think Smash 64 is a legitimate counter to the complete lack of good Fighters on the System.

I could list more but I think you get the picture. I'd imagine most of the N64 hate comes from people wanting to respond to that kind of blatant fanboyism with a heavy dose of reality.

The N64 isn't a bad console, but there's no denying that if you don't like 3D Platformers, and Nintendo's first party offerings you're kind of screwed if it's your only system of that generation.

>> No.6045518

>>6045507
>The N64 was their first console.
Well, that's nobody's fault, younger people are younger. There's also people whose first console was the PS1, or even worse, the PS2.
>Think it was the first console to do 3D
Well, at the time, it was the system that could do the best 3D, even better than consumer PCs in most regards (talking about mid-1996). But anyway, many people have wrong information regarding this, such as many Playstation fanboys thinking Sony was the first to release a CD-based console.
>Think OOT/MM are the greatest games ever made.
This is beyond just Nintendo fanboys. Many people regard these games (mostly OOT) as the greatest, or one of the greatest of all time.
>Bonus points for claiming they're JRPGs
I'd think Nintendo/Zelda fans would even get annoyed if people labeled Zelda as an RPG, and not the other way around.
>Completely oblivious to what was available on other consoles such as the PS1, Saturn, or even the Dreamcast.
Isn't this too much of a generalization? Likewise, a lot of people who didn't own a N64, can only name the same titles always (Mario, Zelda) despite N64 having much more than that.
>Will downplay any shortcoming of the system as a non-issue or even try to claim it's a strength.
That's just how console wars are, happened before 5th gen, and after. And it isn't exclusive to Nintendo/N64 fans.

>Wave Race 64
Again, infinite replay value.
>Mortal Kombat Trilogy
>Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
Gotta be honest, MKT was the whole reason I wanted the system in the first place, but yeah, not really the best. Still though, you are right that this was a very weak, quantity wise, line-up, but the first three games were great.

>I'd think Nintendo/Zelda fans would even get annoyed if people labeled Zelda as an RPG, and not the other way around.

Zelda fans yes, Nintendo 64 fanboys, no. I've seen Nintendo 64 fanboy's flip flop on what genre that game falls under in real time just to try and pad the gaps in the library.

>Isn't this too much of a generalization?
I've had N64 fanboys argue with me that games like Final Fantasy VII and Spyro were on the N64 and that the PS1 had no good 3D games. Yes, they were dead serious.

I'm not talking about the people who it's their favorite of that generation, but still played the other systems. I'm talking about the raving fanboys, which seem to be rather common. In other words the fanboys who have blinders on to every other platform of that generation. If it's not on the N64, they don't care.

I'd say the frequency of those kind of N64 fanboys is what fuels a lot of the N64 hate you see in retro gaming communities.

Limited selection of launch titles wasn't uncommon.

The Famicom launched with Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye. A month later it got a Go game and a Mahjong game. Next month was Mario Bros(not Super Mario Bros). Two months later was a sequel to Popeye. By Christmas they added Baseball and Donkey Kong Jr. Math. The NES had a strong launch since it was a varied best-of from two years worth of releases including Super Mario Bros.

The Mega Drive in Japan had a rough start. Four launch titles, Space Harrier 2, Super Thunder Blade, Altered Beast, and Osomatsu-kun: Hachamecha Gekijō. They had to wait two years before Sonic came along, with the Genesis we only had to wait 7-8 months.

PC-Engine launched with two titles in Japan. One was a reskinned version of Wonder Boy In Monster Land, the other was a mahjong game. A month later, they got China Warrior and J.J. and Jeff. A month later they had Victory Run.

Nice samefagging bro.
The point is games were not disposable like today and i think the ps1 and pc ushered in that era, with an overabundance of shovelware/easily pirated games.
If you really wanted to be objective, we could compare the n64 titles for the first 5 or 6 months vs the ps1's / saturns.
Let's see how many bonafide gems you find there - nothing at all with the longevity of Mario 64, (Ridge Racer with one track LOL)
http://www.oocities.org/TimesSquare/1376/release.html ps1
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_Nintendo_64_games
The only above average games i see are
Rayman (2d)
Ridge Racer
Tekken
Wipeout
Jumping Flash (meh)
Raiden Project (2d)
The rest are forgettable garbage. The above titles are all legit good, but better experiences could still be found in an arcade (fighting/racing) and all lack any real bang for buck. Pilot Wings, Mario 64 and even Star Wars were new experiences and nothing like them could be found elsewhere at the time.

Great LARP moron. The 80's PC scene was already overrun with shovelware and easily pirated games. And the Atari 2600 killed the home console market with shovelware that had splash-over on the arcade market. All this was done before the mid-90's PSX/PC era.

And that's how I know you're a dumb underage LARPer. Nearly no one had a fucking CD burner in the 90's. You know what a 6X burner cost back in 1999? Nearly $300. Barely anyone had the internet either, so you couldn't just hop online and find a mod chip. "Normies" were not burning pirated copies in the 90's. Only the most hardcore of the hardcore were. CD burning didn't become big until the mid 2000's when everyone had high speed internet and was downloading MP3's and wanted to make their own music CDs. Hell, my uncle was a hardcore techie, and I didn't get a modchip or burnt games until around 2004.
