Agreed. I'm happy with what these consoles got. In the case of Ultracore, DICE refound a build and wanted a way to release it to the public without Sony suing them (they own Psygnosis who had the rights). Enter Analogue who fucking bought the rights and now everyone has to buy a Mega SG to play it kthx give Phil Fish money. Columbus Circle are cooler but only for Japanese MDs afaik. Such a shitshow for a game I wanted to try since Dice showed it.

I remember buying the Amiga version for 9 quid back in the day. It's a flawed game but has charm in its huge explorable world and proto-weeb aesthetic. All they did to it here is add nice backgrounds when you're above ground with neat psuedo 3d scrolling and relieve it of having to choose music or sound effects. You jump a bit higher too so lame shit like the fire traps and spikes are easier to hop over. That's $44.99 plus tip.

> And it is supposed to be more accurate.
It has nothing to do with accuracy but emulation of copy protection, which is lacking in Blastem.

Blastem is only more accurate in regard to VDP emulation, which is only useful in a few demos that use some VDP tricks (like Overdrive 2 demo or DMA color demos).

GPGX has more accurate sound emulation and better game compatibility overall as it emulates most (if not all) mappers used in unlicensed games (like Pier Solar for example)

>> No.5985034

Indeed, it is either protected or is a bad dump (I doubt Piko cartridges have copy protection hardware as it would cost money to design/implement so it's probably the latter)

Probably not worth it, because the game was already released in the nineties, and this reprint was done because the original is so hard to find. The reprint is still expensive, besides lacking any original content, which is why I'm saying it's not worth it. They did more of those.

Shockman Zero one would be more interesting among those reprints, as it is supposedly based on a leaked cart of the cancelled 1994 version, rather than the (probably similar, and internally regular SNES rom aside from the header) Satellaview version that still has a 1994 copyright.

Columbus Circle has some other interesting originals like Neo Heiyanko Alien.

anyone know who dumped the game? A picture of the inside of the cartridge could help. Also, the dump is 4MB but the lower 2MB has a weird header and lot of empty space, while the actual game (with valid header indicating 2MB ROM + SRAM mapped at 200001h) seems to be stored in upper 2MB. I tried to run both the full 4MB dump and the extracted 2MB Canon ROM in an emulator with debugger but get stuck in an infinite loop and black screen in both of them so there must be something else...

>> No.5991940

Thunderbolt II (Piko Interactive) and Canon (Piko Interactive) have similar protections. The original chinese "Canon" aka "Feng Shen Ying Jie Chuan" is 2MB size and Piko Interactive version is 4MB with something like... a fake ROM start?!

Looking in Canon ROM, it seems starts in $200000 but why the data repeats in $201000?! The "demonstration program" starting in $000000 does the same... data repeats in $001000. It's a fake program start? Or it's a bad dump because some protection hardware in cartridge?

probably a bad dump with some code/data chunks being hidden by mirroting/mapping hardware

Some of SFT games had similar protections... and Pier Solar as well. The game would probably need to be redumped using some specific cartridge dumper that is able to write to the cartridge and disactivate the mirroring.

Damn, I think this is a first... did he bought exclusive rights for the original translation work from the original hacker/translator? What a cunt move... even Brandon from SFT did not go this far ...

Just wondering , has anyone verified he really owns exclusive rights he claims to have on the games he is publishing. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just made-up claims to legitimate his business. Surely this can be proven with official papers but i find odd he has been able to buy so much game IPs + paying hackers and translators for all these games + handling cartridges production (even if it's cheap material) for such a niche market. Something smells fishy.

Neither is using a translation patch that the actual translator himself stated is the verbatim translation of the "new" game. Of course in a Sega-16 forum thread Piko claimed to have paid the translator for rights to the Brave Battle Saga patch. BTW these Taiwanese games have stolen assets in them from other snes era games, which Piko claims they removed.

Half of those listed also sell ROMs for peanuts, and the rest have said ROMs will get for sale later. 5$ for a ROM is about the same audience as the downloaders, you're right the cart collectors/vintage players aren't.

No, what I meant is that the header is intentionally corrupted to report a false image size and overwrite uncorrupted data, so that the cartridge dumper cannot create a proper working dump.

And your 'solution' makes no sense as there is no way to know what parts are code or data to copy or overwrite ('most' is what exactly ?) without fully disassemble each two ROM versions...

>>5996401
Indeed, I wonder if that mirroring disappears when the cartridge detects it is being run on actual console (for example by checking RESET input signal is kept high, as this signal is usually not driven by cartridge dumpers like retrode or krikzz flashkit) or if it is being disabled/enabled by the game during runtime through specific writes that are intercepted by cartridge hardware (disassembling the ROM shows some write access are done to 0xA16xxx area which is normally unmapped).

In both cases it means the game needs to be re-dumped to get the full ROM (it is similar to Pier Solar initial dumps which were 8MB with the same first 32KB repeated over and over).

Unless I'm mistaken, any commercially available dumper should rely on the header to compile the completed image and not dump the rom purely in raw. IF that is so, using a corrupted header could cause the issues I've mentioned.

You see this chinese piece of shit? It claims to be a 256GB flashstick, but the truth is that it is not. It uses a false header to tell your computer there's 256GB of storage space, but in truth the actual size is unknown and any data stored on it is eventually corrupted by adding additional data. As in adding data begin to overwrite what is on the device and that is what I suggested might be occurring with these dumps, which are relying on easy to use commercially available dumpers.

You can't use hexedit to copy over a large section (as in skipping the first last few bites of usable code and copying everything else) of the code? I'm not telling you to shove a 4MB image into a 2MB file, I'm telling you to try using most of that later half to overwrite the majority of that 2MB image.

Some of them are cool. Tanzer is really fun, sort of Strider meets Shadow of the Beast, with really fast-paced action. Plus, it's difficult, but fair. If you suck at the game, it's because you suck, not because the game is designed to fuck you up by shitty enemy placement or stiff controls. It really is a good game, well designed and with a nice soundtrack. If you must show your support to developers, buy this one above all others, it's fucking worth it.

Xeno Crisis is a very nice game too, but I'd rather play it with two sticks ; it might be better to purchase it on Steam. Still very impressive for a Genesis game, though. Aesthetics are top-notch and the soundtrack kicks ass.

As for the chinese bootlegs re-branded as new games, well no surprise : they're quite shitty. Honestly, I played an hour of Barver Battle Saga and it was a fucking horrible experience. Stolen assets, uninspired story, everybody acting like they've have serious mental issues... It isn't even worth pirating. Same goes for Wukong (horrible grind-fest) and the two rips-offs of KOTR/Dynasty Warriors. Beggar Prince is a little better, but still not a very good RPG. I don't get why people go through the trouble of debugging this shit, let alone put them on cartridges. It's just a waste of time and EEPROMS, and I'm not even sure it can sell well except for a few die-hard collectors who will keep them sealed and not even go through the hassle of playing them.

Tanzer is the best of the lot and really nails the arcade 1cc challenge by making it feel like a roguelike run. Your between stage upgrades let you experiment with different options freely to optimise your run and it's such a quick game death never feels so overwhelming you give up. Any word on a sequel? There are some hanging plot threads from that weird Lords of Thunder stage (unless it's wrapped up in that secret stage that supposedly changes the ending slightly), and I feel like the PC Engine parodies are just scratching the surface.

Does anyone know how to find the secret stage? These are the hints I've managed to come across (paraphrasing):
>"You have to do a sequence of events in a certain order. You should hear a chime if you do it right."
>"I think you must be playing on Normal or Hard. It doesn't unlock on Easy. Play Normal to be safe."
>"It's hinted in the manual." *points to Shir0*
>"It's in the Castlevania stage."
>Something vague about a dark area of the stage.
That should be all the revealed hints. As far as I've ascertained, it has to do with the Shir0 module you can optionally find near the middle of the stage, which goes away after you lose a life. A dark area of the stage can refer to the candles near the beginning, where you get the double-jump near the end, or both. Other than that, I'm at a loss.

This game was sold in very limited numbers. The "drm" you speak of is some versions having either a username or number on the title screen. Either way, that shouldn't discourage dumping. Easy enough to hack that out of the ROM, and who give a shit anyway.

What's the best version of FX Unit Yuki?

PC Engine Super CD > Dreamcast >>> Mega Drive. PC Engine had all the love and the other two were outsourced. Mega Drive is easily the worst version and is downgraded in every where. Dreamcast sits somewhere between the two as it uses Mega Drive as a codebase but restores much of the PC Engine effects. The one thing the ports have over the original is a password system, so if you're playing on real hardware then you may appreciate that since you can't savestate (not that the game's super-long), in which case it's okay to go for the Dreamcast version (which also has upgraded cutscene artwork). Just avoid Mega Drive.

There's also a PC/Steam release in the works that'll include a few extra areas and enemies that couldn't make it to the PC Engine version.
