Do you feel as though there is a cut off age where these "retro" games resonated with youth?

Honestly, I think it's anyone born after 92, just won't have titles resonate with them unless they had older siblings.

I went to a few game developer meetups
and I spoke to some fresh graduates and they keep mentioning how influential "WOW"was and how they played "Assassins Creed' during their teen years; but they know nothing of the console wars of the fourth gen.

Honestly third and fourth gen laid the ground work for the industry as well as the technology we have today. WoW didn't do shit for anyone except rake in money from china and places were there was a console embargo like korea

>keep mentioning how influential "WOW"
I agree that it was influential, but I will forever hate it for basically killing Blizzard and any hope at ever having a proper WC4. Too bad we don't live in an alternate universe where Lord of the Clans were released, failed miserably, and made Blizzard to decide to never experiment with drastic genre changes again, meaning they'd never discover the MMORPG money printing machine and instead we'd have a handful of additional, high quality WarCraft, StarCraft, and Diablo games instead of the pitifully small library we have now.

>blah blah blah I mentioned the word "retro", now time to talk about wow, asscreed, and blogpost
Why can't /v/ actually talk about retro games? Because they don't play videogames. Go back.

it's all china and korea's fault.

Nah, it's not that. If I posted this on polycount they would bite my head off.

>influential WOW was
I still don't understand how it was. We had MUDs for years prior to WOW. Everquest was a thing, plus DAoC existed before WOW. Even if it is just the MMO genre, it should be noted that said genre is pretty much dead at this point. I don't think Minecraft or Skyrim has anything to do with WOW.

>third and fourth gen
Obviously earlier titles lay the foundation for more modern titles. I am not really sure there was much evolution from the NES platformer era though. Especially with the advent of 3d, people started disliking platforming more and more. Most games these days often are FPS or RPG inspired. Both trace their roots to Ultima Underworld, which of course was influenced by earlier entries in the Ultima series. So essentially the titles that nerds would play while everyone else would just touch the consoles.

Maybe it is just bias, but I feel Generation V and later were substandard to the progress that was being made on the PC at the time. At best would be the endless titles that Nintendo spat out.

There are zoomers who come here saying they played X game for the first time and was really impressed with it, while there are also zoomers that come here and say that X game didn't age well and only nostalgia is why someone likes the game. FFVII is one game that I have seen it mentioned here. I would say that generally people either like a game or they don't irregardless of age, but zoomers are more prone to say a game is outdated as an excuse as to why they don't like it. Saying that anyone born after 92 doesn't resonate with retro titles is kind of dumb considering how many indie devs go for the "pixel art" look and what you see discussed here.
>how influential "WOW"was and how they played "Assassins Creed'
Sounds like just another way of saying they really liked those games and want to make games like them. That statement doesn't sound too much like they were saying WoW pioneered the MMORPG genre (it wasn't, MMOs were around much longer) or that Assassins Creed was the a ground breaking platformer (it was just Prince of Persia in an open world). For all I know they could be very well aware of those facts.
>Honestly third and fourth gen laid the ground work for the industry as well as the technology we have today
Wouldn't the earlier generation lay the ground works for later? Why isn't the first generation important at laying the ground work?

They go for the emulated nearest neighboor pixel art look that a younger person would associate with emulating games rather than what they actually looked like on your old living room's shitty crt.
