Post strangely melancholic retro music. I think this is unintentionally depressing in a weird way.

i always thought green hill zone had a lowkey depressing touch to it. like it both has that feeling of speed and freedom in it, as well as something more lonesome and lost. like there's something else supposed to be there that just isn't. in fact a lot of the first sonic game has that vibe. for being a game so apparently about 90s 'tude, it always had a bleak, mysterious, and lonely atmosphere to me that most other sonic games besides cd don't have at all

That's interesting. I've never noticed but now that you point it, it's true that Sonic 1 music has some kind of nostalgic and sad vibe, without falling into being depressing. Something similar happens to Sonic CD japanese OST, where even Palmtree Panic's theme (first stage theme) has a melancholic sound, especially in the second part of the song.

I bellieve that's one of the reasons why, when I played Sonic Adventure back then, despite its flaws, something about the game reminded me a lot of the first Sonic. On of the reasons it's because of the music and the return of that nostalgic vibe in the soundtrack. Sonic Adventure has a lot of sad songs, and one of the first themes you hear it's Station Square, which again, has that melancholic sound too.

I always think I’m weird for getting oddly emotional at video game music, but then a thread like this is made and I remember that I’m not alone.

I know EXACTLY what you mean re: that song, Anon. It’s always been my favorite in SML but it has a wistful quality, doesn’t it? You get the sense that Hip Tanaka was reminiscing on happier days gone by. It evokes feelings of the 70s for me (even though I was born in ‘84), of Abba and disco ballrooms, with some shades of 50s malt shop memories, too. It’s a bittersweet feeling if you wish you were young again, and it does make for an unintentionally depressing song.

JESUS FUCK

OH GOD

I had never played this game past the first level. I had no idea. Holy shit. A recap for the uninitiated:

>You get to the final room and McBurglar cries for help, trapped inside a large frame on the wall in the background
>You begin to battle him, as if he is possessed, and it seems to be the final boss
>You defeat McBurglar, he flies down the screen
>The screen fades to black
>This abomination, this gigantic fat horrifying clown with full rows of razor sharp teeth and an ear to ear grin crashes down from the top of the screen and proceeds to fly around, terrorizing against the backdrop which now features an eerie shadow monster figure

Honestly reminds me of Castlevania, how Dracula appears to be the final boss and then a fanged abomination appears when you think it's over. Akumajou Dracula came out in Japan for the Famicom Disk System in September 26, 1986, way before Donald Land, so it's possible it was a direct inspiration, though false surprise bosses were probably a trope even by 1986. But still

GOD DAMN

They don't make them like they used to. Would be something if this was released in the USA and an entire generation of Americans had nghtmares about playing this as a kid. WAY more interesting than McKids.

oh i know right? i remember that part specifically really weirding me out when i first played through 15+ years ago. hamburglar being possessed always struck me as a pretty creepy concept for a fucking mcdonalds game. also the evil clown gets shown off a bit if you wait all the way through the cast intro at the title screen so he is built-up somewhat. the game actually has quite a bit of unsettling enemies that have downright nothing to do with mcdonalds. such an anomaly of a game. it weirded me out when i was 9 and still weirds me out just as much. i feel like it wasn't released over here because it was maybe considered a bit too weird for american audiences. and that was probably a good call lol cause yeah i don't think american mcdonalds want kids to think of possessed mascots flying at them and monstrous, fat shark-clowns whenever they see the yellow arches

The beginning is inspired by Canon In D Major by Pachelbel, then the main theme the intro transitions to samples the music played in the location Twinkle Elementary School from MOTHER/Earthbound Zero. My favorite Sonic song, and one that I think fits the theme, is the Major Boss Music from 3/Knuckles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVnn0fVoiV4

It has a tragic and desperate tone, as if it's Robotnik's last stand. In a way I genuinely feel this to be the case, as 3/Knuckles was the last traditional Sonic game of the original era.

It also reminds me of the Castle theme to Super Mario World, 1 minute and 30 seconds in. Again, you get that tragic and futile feeling, as if the emotions of the main villain are speaking to you even as you are in the process of killing him..

For my input, FFIV is FULL of this stuff. Much more so than your average FF game, which already has it in spades. Even your freaking airship theme has a wistful sort of whimsy to it.

Sim City SNES - the "Goodbye" screen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL6FsGp2HHw

I can't be the only one who was bothered by this as a child, can I? There was something cold and frightening about the melody that I just couldn't stand to listen to more than a few seconds before shutting the system off. As an adult I still hear it, although it's also taken on a sad quality as well, and I can now articulate what it makes me feel: like the universe is frigid and cruel, like life is too short and I'm just a meaningless blip in history. I think of fires burning and animals dying and the world evolving in the vast nothingness of space.

I'm not a pessimistic person by nature, but these are the thoughts I contend with if I force myself to listen to this one song on loop.

It really is. I don't know what it was about Soyo Oka's work on the SNES, but you can even find examples in Pilotwings and Mario Kart that are sort of melancholy in some odd way.

It blows my mind that this was released in 1993, only a year after Wario debuted in Super Mario Land 2. Things moved so fast back then... the Mario series was growing, evolving, adding new characters and delving into backstories (Yoshi's Island). What happened? How did Mario go from being a series of games with the rare spinoff (e.g. Super Mario Kart) to a "franchise"?

Man I absolutely loved this game. To me, this is what Mario is all about. It had so many secret spots.

Here's a way to get unlimited lives in level 1-2.

The first heart in pic related comes out of a cube that you have to bump into mid-air to get. You grab that heart, and then there's a cube with a bunch of coins nearby. Grab all of those and then commit suicide and repeat until you have enough coins for another life. Once you've got a bunch of lives you can finish the rest of the game relatively easily stress-free

I always hum along from 0:07 to 0:13, "don't care, what you say
Don't care, what you say"

Then the melody starting at 0:20 until 0:34,
"Dont care what you say
Dont care what anybody say"

Then the phrase from the 0:35 until 0:47,
"Dont caaaaare, what, you , SAY!
SAY!
Dont caaaaare, what you, SAY!"

Then the noise at 0:47 to 0:49, i would hum a little "aaahhh!!" as if falling down a ravine.

Now you too can enjoy this experience

They were done by yokoi's team, who didn't want to make Mario at all, but had to make mario, so they did what they want. Wario was made exactly because of their disdain for Mario, and then Wario Land they made as a way to not have to make Mario anymore and to get back at having made mario games.

For me, it's the sword hunt. Probably nostalgia too, just makes me think back to the past.

Thanks for this, it put me down a rabbit hole of listening to music from all the games my half-assed research could dig up that were possibly scored by some of the people who worked on Super Castlevania IV (which in my casual opinion has the best soundtrack among all games).

Axelay doesn't really sound like SCIV (in the way I was wanting) and neither do most of the others. Most of them are good though. I half-assedly found two gems: Contra III, which doesn't really count because I already knew about it before looking, and Mōryō Senki Madara 2, whatever the heck that is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ9r03GkahQ

Anyway I've been listening to that last one repeatedly, it's pretty cool. Definitely one of the more interesting SNES/SFC soundtracks.

As far as I know, only SCIV and Axelay were composed by them as a team. Masanori Adachi has worked with others or alone in other Konami soundtracks, though.

Axelay sounds different than SCIV, but at the same time, the music feels kind of mysterious and melancholic too, with a taste for experimentation and the use of different music styles, like Castlevania IV.

The composers seem to be quite weird dudes. They had a music group called Thelonius Monkeys, and after quitting Konami, they developed some strange and quirky games like the famous Moon RPG, or the Tingle games for Nintendo DS. All of them having quite strange and interesting soundtracks. Masanori keeps doing music but Taro Kudo seems to be more focused in his job as a game designer and producer at Vanpool.

The first one is less depressing to me, more "gulp, this is it, Mega Man's last stand" because the Wily bosses are getting pretty hard at that point.

But that VI one... damn, that always depressed me, even back when I first played it as a teenager. A lot of MM5 and MM6 music depressed me even then, because it was hard to ignore that these games would be some of the last games released on the NES. And as Capcom squeezed all they could out of the 2A03 sound chip late in the NES' life span, instead of sounding energetic and epic the songs became dire and bleak. Like even the NES/Famicom itself knew that its days were numbered and more and more people were selling it or putting into storage to make room for newer and flasher consoles. Time marches on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEreupvFu3Y

I find that a lot of old video game music has this haunting quality to me. There's just something about being inside on a summer day, when you know all the psychologically healthy kids are outside riding bikes and making memories, and encountering something tucked away in a video game that seems so incongruously beautiful or meaningful. A feeling of the impossibility to grasp life completely, the endless options slipping through your fingers, the desire to stop it all and hold onto it all, time irrevocably passing. Why is something that pierces my heart hidden in a silly Japanese video game to be forgotten by the world? Why did I squander my golden youth?

Very beautifully put, Anon. As we get older those memories of hours spent glued to a monochrome handheld screen wandering around two-dimensional worlds take on a bittersweet dimension. More specific to the song you just posted, though, it's always blown my mind that its an original piece of music and not a classical piece like the other songs in GB Tetris. Someone could've told 12-year old me that it was Tchaikovsky and I would have believed them, it's just that poignant.

Jolly Roger's Lagoon always gave me a weird "sad old town" sort of vibe. Like the good times are long gone and all we can do is reminisce.

Play Mother 1. Paula's theme came from a town where everyone's parent's were missing so I think it was supposed to communicate that feeling.

I always play this when its snowing outside. It sounds wistful and faraway while also being cheery and bright. It reminds me of a Christmastime where you know you're not getting what you want, but kinda hope anyway, and either way you're ok with it because you know what you're getting and its not that bad or anything.

It's just not what you want.

Super Castlevania IV: The Library (nostalgic and comfy. Makes me picture an ancient quiet library with the sunrays of early afternoon entering through the windows)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g11Or2ZvKWU

Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair: Jungles (Title of the song is wrong. It's not the Big Houses' theme. Very nostalgic theme for me too)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT6FCz4lmKU

E-Swat - City Under Siege: Theme 1 (Better on real hardware. Conveys perfectly the image of the lonely and dark futuristic city. The whole soundtrack has a gritty 70s cop show feeling)

Super Mario RPG: Welcome to Booster Tower (surprised this wasn't posted yet. One of the most melancholic songs of the soundtrack)

all of that game has this sort of vibes to it, even when it was out. I love it

I read this line at 10 years old and wondered what my future held for me. 30 years old, still playing games in the same basement

That's just a very stretched out opening theme to a happy hardcore Bonkers-album.
