Someone also mentioned that the game was very difficult to get running in early SNES emulation. Apparently it makes the SNES run a lot hotter than a typical game.

Really? Have more to tell us about the game, or even proof about the "SNES running hot" thing?

If that's true, then why the game needed so much overclocking in the first place despite it being a simple platformer?
This game's a mess.

Porky Pig is just your average Eurojank. Basically the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or MorphX of the 90s.

it is for the music and sound effects, which are using some impressive amount of bandwidth even if they don't sound so

I had this game growing up and the music didn't sound like this at all. I think there are two versions of the game ROM that circulate around, or maybe there were two cartridges even, and they both had different styles of music. One sounded more "normal," while the other sounded like this. At least that's my guess.
The game was pretty interesting, even though it's just a mediocre platformer. There were randomized weather effects each time you would play the game. Sometimes the first level was Christmas themed, while other times it was just snowing. Sometimes it wasn't snowing, but there's just snow on the ground.
The second level is Wild West themed, and if you were lucky you might see it at night. I remember one of the levels having raining fish skeletons instead of snow, and the Atlantis boat ride level sometimes having rain.
The music has a really unique, dreamy, distant quality unlike any other game on the system. The graphics were pretty good and captured the dreaminess well. It's really a strange and different game.

That last one just needs a breakbeat and it would be like a dark Boards of Canada track

As someone who loves variants and prototypes absolutely cool as fuck. I wonder if there's any sort of documentation or way to know which version you'll get before buying it? Hell I wonder if one is some prototype or something.
