For those of you who completed Super Mario Bros as kids or without any use of savestates on emulators or original hardware, how long did it take you? The game isn't that long, but with all the trial and error, especially in world 8, it must be at least 10+ hours to master and then finally complete, right?

Follow up question: did anyone complete The Lost Levels without savestates?

I don't remember. I was stuck on World 8-2 for a long time as a kid, that much I do know for sure.

I used to play it pretty much every day from the ages of 6 to 8 when I finally beat it. It's hard to know exactly how much time I spent.

SMB is hella slippery compared to the last time i remember playing. Mario Maker 2 has spoiled me.

Speaking of slippery, doesn't the New Super Mario Bros. series feel really slippery? It's not retro I know, but i tried playing it recently and thought it was basically unplayable due to the slippery controls. It feels like every level's an ice level.

I still think 3 and World had the best movement, but youre right it takes Mario a long time to slow down from movement.

I think I finally beat the original version when I was 11. It took about 4 or 5 hours. At that point, I had beaten the All-Stars versions of all of them so I went in with some experience
Never played through FDS Mario 2, did beat All-Stars on both modes but that was a lot easier

its pretty spergy to count hours in a game as an adult and I definitely didn't do it when I was 7. I imagine it was dozens of hours at least. I learned how to play video games with SMB1.

That's exactly what I thought. I was mega disappointed when I first played NSMB DS and still don't really like the series.

I just beat it recently on an emulator on my Wii with no save states, warps or 1-up tricks. I think at one point I used a warp to practice world 8 but when I beat it I did it from the beginning. I had 2 lives left and got to Bowser with a fire mushroom but somehow a projectile graced me and I sprinted like a madman to Peach and that was that.

It was pretty intense, mostly because of the Hammer Bros World 8-3. I didn't use a walk through except for the very last warp pipe in 8-4. There are actually two hidden power up blocks in the bricks in World 8-3 where the Hammer Bros are, so even if you start it out small you can be Fire Mario in preparation for the final castle if you are lucky to miss the barrage of hammers or jump under to kill them in time.

I feel similarly about this game as I do about the first Legend of Zelda, which was developed at the same time with many of the same people and resources. The game feels 'cheap' a lot, and not in the sense where if you "git gud" you see things opening up for you more. It's like how in the dungeons in the first Zelda, you go into a room and the screen is just riddled with an orgy of projectiles and enemies before you have a chance to know what's going on. The flurry of hammers makes it feel like a bullet hell game where your ship has gravity and keeps getting pulled down to the ground.

The process took me 4 hours because I played it from the beginning twice and practiced for at least 2 hours at World 8. But I've played this game years in the past, so I have a deep familiarity with the controls. To be honest, I realized that optimism really aided me here, when I realized it was possible to avoid the hammers by running under the hammer bros and timing myself correctly, and that there were more power-ups than I thought, it became more manageable.

This is how I use savestates, it just emulates how I used to leave my console running when I had to go to bed or whatever.

Saying they're unplayable is a stretch. I thought they played fine, but they feel like a downgrade since you can't spin jump or throw shells upward like in world.
Mario 3 felt slippery after playing the Wii game a lot with my nephew.

Like 4 hours I think, I didnt exactly time myself.

Never beat it as a kid and never went back to try as an adult. I must have put hundreds of hours into it, it was the first game I ever had and the only game I had for a month or two. I was very young.

when i beat it in the late 80s i just remember it took forever to finally memorize everything enough to be able to do it. no idea how long the run took that ended up in beating it. doesnt really matter though cuz if i were to do it now i could probably just beat the whole game on my second or third try just from years of vidya

>>5791783
I probably played a month or so, maybe 2. I never beat it straight through. I remember coming back to it when I found out about warp pipes and beating it. I beat every other Mario game though. I was just too young when I first played, I didn't have the ability to memorize everything necessary.

>> No.5794398

never did it as a kid, but recently I did with no warps, glitches, or save state. I was down to my very last life too when I finally beat it. Took a good 5-6 hours overall.

>> No.5794408

To master? Hmm, probably a couple days if you count up the hours. To beat it only took maybe 2 or so hours.

I spent several years playing the game, trying to finish it. You see, I was a moron, and overlooked the fact that you could hold A to continue from where you died. I was also adamant that I would complete the game 100% without warp zones. This meant each time an attempt was made, I would 1cc until I lost all my lives. Near the end, I'd consistently get to world 8 and get my shit kicked in. I abandoned it for other games, until one day a friend told me the hold A trick. I finished the game in one evening, and felt like a goddamned idiot. Haven't touched the game since.

Do you really expect me to remember how long did take 5 year old me to beat SMB?

>> No.5794778

>>5791783
Question is impossible to answer because I didn't play with the intention of beating the game from the first time I played it. As a kid I would just warp around to different levels and try to do different things. Actually beating the game was not really that important.

If you really must know I believe from first play through to finishing the second quest was 2-3 years. Keeping in mind I was about 5 at the beginning.

>World 8-2
I remember my class made us write journals every day to practice writing, and I wrote about one of the jumps in 8-2, complete with hand-drawn illustration to explain the part I was stuck on. My teacher probably thought I was a fucking idiot.

um, if you were playing it that much you would've found the warp zones which will get you to level8 in no time.
