How hidden do you like your quest items?

>> No.5736284

Fuck every aspect of Dragon Quest 2. I read it was so bad that one of the playtesters actually collapsed and had to go to the emergency room.

>> No.5736317

Dragon Quest 2 is one of my favorite RPG experiences. I drew a complete map of the world, had a notebook where I wrote down everything that seemed like a clue and explored the shit out of it. It felt like unraveling a puzzle. Very few JRPGs have given me this feeling.

Only problem i had with Qragon Quest II was the Sun Crest, i had to search it online, to be honest whenever i replay the game i use maps for the Lighthouse and the Cave to Rhone because they are way to big.

I wouldn't have minded this level of obscure easter-egg hunting on some optional content, but when you can't advance the story because the quest item you need is hidden half a world away with just a vague clue it ruins the pacing and my enjoyment.

Case in point, DQ2. Was having a good time until I needed the ship, and then painstakingly having to search the world map for where I needed to go next for hours until I gave up and consulted a guide.

Main quest items should always be pretty straightforward. Nothing wrong with hidden optional gear or armor, as long as its not permanently missable.

Hydlide II is worse than anything in Super Hydlide. Even Japan doesn't like Hydlide II.

The crests aren't that bad. You have the Echoing Flute to detect them.

This shit though. The ocean in DQ2 is way too big and empty. It took me an eternity to find that stupid island town in the middle of nowhere.

I really liked how DQ4 handled it

By DQ4 they pretty much knew what people wanted. Things like stupidly hidden items and dungeons that were just giant maze that lead mostly to nowhere was out of fashion. People say DQ3 is one of the best in the series but personally DQ4 NES is pretty much RPG perfection. Only real problem I have is the lack of a world map which even FF1 NES had it.

On a missable enemy as well. If you grind for the sword you are overpowered for the rest of the game, unless you scan everytime then run, which takes even longer. Also Parasite Eve's junk grind. >>5736332
You obviously never played games like Phantasy Star, at least without constantly consulting a guide. You have no chance beating the game or finding the good shit unless you draw maps and write down all the random clues the people tell you. There are hidden doors you are fucked for finding unless you seriously consider some vague hint a guy gives you, and little chance beating Medusa without the shield from some other dungeon.

DQ4 is inferior almost in every aspect to DQ3. Is nice that it included more story and characters in spite of actual exploration. But that makes it feel less of a game.

the trick is having little treasures and rare monsters etc. hidden in every corner of your dungeon, so that even when you reach a dead end it doesn't feel like a waste of time.

>as long as its not permanently missable.

Permanently missable items add a level of realism to a game that you can't achieve any other way. Complaining about permanently missable items is zoomer-tier.

In that era and even the 16 bit era it was always a thing to explore the boundaries of any town or building looking for secrets. If you reach the left or right edge of map and ot exits town, there is no secret but when you can take even one step past the wall without zoning that mean you're explore further. As kids we tested everything, no different than random Bush burning in zelda.

Pic related is destiny of an emperor. You always test the boundaries in that era. I believe in this game the reward was one free XP level up, and if you used it late game you could even exceed the level cap.
